Push throttle and one engine just revs at 8000 rpm with no thrust.

I am away from my home or else I wouldn’t post or ask questions. But I have a 242 s limited 2012 and have never had issues with the engines but today I hit the gas pulling a skier and the left engine just rev’d out at 8900 rpm but no thrust. If I go gradually and build up it works totally fine….I don’t know what to do or check? It was just service 1 month ago and they said it was perfect.

I have to ask the obvious question, is your clean out plug installed and latched tight?

yes seems to be I checked that first.....The boat runs perfectly fine if I take off gradually...no issues just when I push the throttle down quickly it sounds like its slipping and just rev's.

Pull your cleanout plug and feel around the impeller (with motors off) check for chips, dents, and debris, if you can't get the boat out of the water. Double check your impeller, intake grate and shaft are clear of debris. Verify the shift buckets are moving correctly up and down, when shifting and nothing is impeding. Again, reset the clean out plug.

Thank you. Hoping not to have to pull the boat out as I’m away at a cottage and the ramp and trailer aren’t close. I’ll see what I can do with the clean out….should there be a lot of water on the clean out and the middle compartment? With a black hose/tube in it?

That is normal. I get a lot in there as people drip onto the swim platform after climbing out. It never hurts to pop the access panel in the cleanout to peek into the bilge and make sure you don’t see it leaking from the tube.

Thank you, I took the clean out plug out and cleaned it and took a bit of debris out of the shaft. shaft and propeller no dings etc......just ran it after putting it back in securely and runs perfect. Thank you again. Happy boating.

Thanks for the reply. I did that and all looks great...no water and everything down there ( not that I know what I'm looking at ) looks good and no leaks. Thanks again.

It won't be the last time you suck something up. Glad you had a simple fix.

Glad it was easy to find. The symptoms you described are almost always caused by cavitation, which is almost always caused by either an improperly seated cleanout plug or a small bit of something stuck in the pump.
