Each time, the winch handle is centimeters away from tearing up my tailgate. To remedy this, I removed the retainer bolt, drilled a hole through the shaft, and secure the handle on the shaft with a quick release pin. Works like a charm and no more worrying about tearing up the truck!

So you have to make a tight and slow U turn in reverse to store your boat? That is crazy! How long does that take? Is another alternative to mount the winch handle on the other side of the winch?

Where did you get the traction pad for the winch top? I want that.

The traction pad looks a lot like the ones I bought at Walmart. Mine are marketed to the RV crowd but I use them on my pwc trailer.

Traction pad came from Walmart.

I tried to move the winch to the opposite side, but it didn’t work. That’s when this idea came to fruition.
