Has anyone had any experience with refurbished audio equipment?

I have heard that refurbished audio equipment sometimes is very good because the factory techs go through them with a fine tooth comb to make sure the equipment doesn't get sent back a second time.

I once bought a refurbished Apple computer which is still working fine after 4 years. I am looking at a JL marine amp that has been refurbished by JL at a pretty good discount.

I will pay the extra money if refurbished is a bad idea.

If it carries a warranty, why not?

I've never had a problem with refurbished electronics. Typically you are buying something that someone returned or had a slight malfunction like a missing part or broken plastic part. A component failure is also a possibility but is easily diagnosed and repaired. Overall I think it's a good move as long as you have some sort of warranty/return policy.

I bought my interior speakers direct from polk as refurbished and they came with a warranty. I would do it again no questions asked.

It depends on WHO is selling the gear. If it is JL Audio or a genuine authorized JL Audio dealer then it is a safe purchase. If the refurbished product is coming from a non-authorized dealer then the refurbished status is fishy and so is any hope of future service. You can't get equipment serviced at any price that has an altered serial number.
