First, I know everyone has their own opinions about oil types and brands. I like Royal purple.

I had always used Mobil1 and Mobil1 filters until I looked into Royal Purple and K&N filters on recommendation of a friend who races boats. So I called them up and after a very long discussion about the differences in oils I went with the RP HPM and saw a noticeable difference in my 2006 SX230HO...so much that I switched to Royal Purple in all my vehicles. The big difference is their additive packages. All synthetics have additive packages for anti-wear, corrosion, thermal, cleaning, etc... It is my understanding that Royal Purple has an additive called Synerlec in addition to the normal zinc and phosphorous anti-wear. The big difference in their different packages is the amount of these from car oil through their extreme performance racing oils. The car oil is the only one that meets API levels necessary to meet new car warranties. The big thing I see there is in the anti-wear the level of phosphorous needs to be below 800 PPM. So several years ago when I called we determined that the best product for my boat would be the High Performance Marine.

Well yesterday someone was talking about the company changing hands and making changes to the formulas. The company was sold but in 2012 and there are no major new formulations; but one thing I found when I went to order my new oil is that I couldn't find the HPM online anymore. So I called them today and found out they discontinued the HPM line because of slow sales.....Damn! So after another long conversation I was informed that all of their oils will meet the corrosive needs of marine engines; but their HPS line (High Performance Street) would be the one to go with now. It actually has a higher level of Synerlec, zinc and phosphorous then the HPM had and it's only about a quarter more per quart. ($8.30/qt at Jeggs)...

Just figured someone may want to know....

Are you sending the used oils in for analysis? Just curious as to how you know its an improvement.

Yes. What changed. I know that with some oils you can "feel" that it runs better, smoother etc. Is it more than that? Cam.

What changed when you switched from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple?
Ran smoother, quieter, and RPMs went up also giving a bit more speed.

Also, did you use 10W40?

I'm very interested. ANY improvement especially in an MR-1 HO would be kind of amazing actually.
I'm always a sucker for better oils and additives, but I've learned to be skeptical.

My boat was running at about 10k RPM with the Mobil1 and after I got to probably 10,200 to 10,300, maybe even 10,400(can't quite remember); so for me it was noticeable. I am guessing you may get 100 maybe 200 more if you are at 10,200; but no guarantee. As for the weight; I use the recommended 30 weight (10w-30). If you go to the 40 weight; 40 weight(10w-40) is thicker, so you will drop a bit of RPMs. Now if you go to a lower weight weight the RPMs will increase a bit more; but now you are playing with added heat and possibly not enough lubrication as I understand it. The first number is a temperature rating for viscosity at start up. The higher number is viscosity at temp (up to like 220 I think) after that it will thin out....at least that is how I understand it. A performance filter always helps. I use K&N currently.

If it only was so simple! But I just don't know... The video clip you posted in the other thread - sorry but that is total BS.

Not your fault, of course, but it is a test that involves A TON of human factor, probably paid for by Royal purple, etc. And it is not a viscosity test, the loss of viscosity being the leading cause of engine wear. And there are so many other factors to consider, it's not even funny. That's why I don't generally watch that crap, like ever.

I am still very interested in your results, hope you will keep us posted here on your long term results! Thank you for sharing.
