We have had a policy with Geico through Boat US for four years and after talking to other people about what they were paying decided to get a quote from Progressive.
With the same coverage except I increased the stated value of the boat by $7,000 we are saving a little over $400 a year. Pays to check around!,

We have been using progressive for our boats too.

I have been using them for years , excellent people to deal with so I also went with them for car insurance it ended up being the WORST DECISION I EVER MADE FOR CAR INSURANCE one hand has no idea what the other hand is doing I can not believe they have the same name but I believe the boat insurance is carried via AARP so perhaps that is why it is so different.

We use USAA for our home and auto, USAA doesn’t directly write boat/motorcycle policies. Instead they direct their clients to Progressive directly with a link on their webpage. From what I could tell we are getting a discount because they consider it bundled even though it’s a different company.

Had everything with Geico and when time came to insure the boat switched everything to Progressive.
And saved a bunch of money, 2 cars, house, boat.
Geico quote though Boat USA was stupid. Initially was reasonable on the website and later real quote through email was 30% more.

Moved from Allstate to Farmers and saved a little. Out entire policy is around $400, so now way we could save hundreds unless it's free insurance.

I realize this is an old thread, but I didn't see the need to start a new one. Just got a 12% rate increase from SkiSafe. I spoke with a rep, and they were very helpful finding me some discounts. I originally thought I would lower the agreed value coverage since my boat is 10 years old, but wound up leaving it at 54k. The agent said they usually pay at the top end of valuations. I have confidence in them, as they paid my one and only claim super fast with zero issues. I now have no deductible, and paying 500 a year. Coverage includes the trailer too. I checked with progressive, but the only way to get a lower rate was to carry less coverage. Sucks that everything keeps going up, but I have had excellent experiences with SkiSafe, and USAA . They cover my homes, cars, and have my umbrella coverage too. I have some term life with them, but my wife will have to post her experience on that one at some point..

I don't think Farmers insures boats. Our Farmers agent has been insuring our watercraft for years through Markel, NOT Farmers.

We were forced to drop Markel last year when they changed their policy to no longer cover towing. This includes skiers, wakeboards, tubes, etc. In addition, they also said that they would no longer insure my higher speed JetSkis (Kawasaki Ultra 310 and Ultra 150). These revelations caught my agent by surprise, he had no idea. I bought the Ultra 150 new in 1999 and insured it with them since day one. No claims ever. READ YOUR POLICY!!!

I switched to Progressive and they were a lot cheaper. I don't know how they are when it comes to processing claims. The problem I had with them was that they didn't like the number of watercraft I had. Four JetSkis and three power boats. I told them that we obviously wouldn't operate them all at the same time, it would take all day just to launch them! They still wanted names and driver's license numbers of people that might use them, so I gave them a list of nieces & nephews that had driven them in the past and they were happy. I did have to pay a premium based on age and driving record. They'd have a fit if they knew how many watercraft I actually have, but the other seven are never used.

Progressive has limits on horsepower (300 max). They may cover higher HP at a higher cost. READ YOUR POLICY!!!

Just got done reading my policy because you gave me a small scare. We have progressive for our boat and it’s 400HP (2024 252SE). And we pay $460 a year, which beat State Farm by quite a bit but same coverage.

Yes, there are many boats and PWCs that are over the 300 HP limit. I suspect they add a horsepower surcharge or it may be built into the their data of particular models. There was a question on my application asking about any mods that would increase the horsepower or top speed above a certain amount.

Oh, yeah, I re-counted my PWCs at home today and it's not seven, it's eight. 🤪

You are right. My buddy is Farmers Agent. The actual policy and underwriting is Foremost.

While it's a cast iron bitch to shop around for insurance, I have no problems stating that if you DON'T shop your insurance needs around at least every 2 years, you're being extremely foolish. I say this, admitting that I myself did NOT do this for quite a while, so hold off on your letters to the editor about my tone.

Our homeowner's went up, up, up, until we switched to Farmers. The old company wouldn't even TOUCH the lake house, but Farmers would. The lake house was insured at that time by the existing policy of my parents after they had passed, but before I had been able to take over ownership, so I needed to get something. Farmers insured the lake house via Foremost, like many here have mentioned that Farmers seems to do. I eventually ended up skipping the middle man, as I learned that Farmers was CHARGING me to subcontract the lake house, and I went directly with Foremost.

I had vehicles through State Farm, until they absolutely screwed me on a claim. That was the impetus for me to start looking EVERY year for a newer and cheaper insurance company, for EVERYTHING. Yearly turned out to be a waste of my time and the headache of dealing with the sales pitches of every Tom Dick & Harry who wanted just a moment of my time to offer me higher prices and less coverage than I already had.

I went with EVERY vehicle through Progressive. Had one claim that was handled quickly and promptly, and the other claim FIVE YEARS LATER, where my wife was hit by a jackass as she was turning left into the driveway, and he tried to PASS her on the left, hitting the car. They nickel and dimed everything they could off the payout - the wheel that was hit wasn't included, because the scrapes on it "look like that's from parking too close to the curb". I raised holy hell, because who parks next to the sidewalk ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, typically? They sure showed their ass to me, and I dropped them for Geico for the cars, and saved some money.

Progressive ALSO didn't like the number of "motorized vehicles" I had - 4 cars at the time, 4 mopeds, and the boat. They weren't insuring the boat, because at the time I bought it, they wanted $200 MORE than the old insurance company, even with EIGHT "motorized vehicles" that I had with them. Fast forward to last year, when the boat insurance wanted to double my rates. Progressive now saved me $400/year on the boat, because I was a longstanding existing customer with....4 mopeds 🤦‍♂️ My moped insurance DROPPED after I left their car insurance, but added the boat.

Moral of the story is, as @Exciter 220 said, READ YOUR POLICY, and being a former fool myself, DON'T BE A FOOL, SHOP YOUR INSURANCE NEEDS OFTEN. The political reasons behind some of these insurance companies is enough to piss me right the eff off, but that's not for discussion here - just know that your wallet doesn't care WHO it's relinquishing all those fancy green fun tickets to, it just wants to keep as many of them on-hand for you as possible.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk duck-hunt-dog.gif

Had boat insurance with Progressive for ten years. I had an incident years ago and had no issues with the claim. They are great.

Hadn’t shopped in many years. Geico/BoatUS slowly crept up to $1500/yr for my 2014 despite the agreed value being lowered automatically every year.

On your advice, shopped rates with Progressive and knocked nearly $900+ off the price, at the same time improving coverage. Also switched jet skis from Nationwide and saved another few hundred. Less than 15 minutes. Ironically, the longest part was calling (and waiting for callback) to cancel my old policies!

Just wanted to say thanks for the reminder.

We have been using progressive for our boats too.
Update...We still use progressive for auto, but progressive did not want to insure a 1991 catamaran, even though they insured a 1991 Beneteau and we had a survey for the cat. We switched to State Farm.
