Thanks to all the members that have made this FAQ a must read for the Yammy owners. I am a very mechanically challenged owner, but this FAQ helped in the following ways:
-tried the ram lubing and got my non-callused hands dirty in the diagnostic process
-deduced it was indeed Cable rust/deterioration/failure
-figured out and fixed a simple (separate throttle tension issue with my starboard side)
-developed a better knowledge of where to maintain baby-snot level level lubicant to retard this "rust problem" in the future
-bought the correct teleflex equivalent product on Amazon, based on the part number mapping spreadsheet
-insured the service cost/hours that I ultimately paid, were aligned with "the job" and duration the FAQ contributors described

@Julian thanks for your prodding and coaching for me to take this on myself, but my propensity to strip bolts, break plastic parts, lose small bits and generally screw things up mechanically is very high.

I just recently replaced the reverse cables. I consider myself pretty handy. I also replaced my Throttle shifter to a simpler Griffith model. The rear side was not too bad, but the shifter connection in the Yamaha shifter was not a piece of cake at all. (Not discouraging anyone from trying themselves, but validating your personal decision to pay if you could, and had qualified people available to do it for you)

The secret to learning how to do this is to go SLOW when you are doing something you have not done before, purchase the right tools, and to take plenty of pictures and keep your disassembled fastener and parts in order to make sure you can put them back in correctly.

Following these recommendations I have saved 10s of thousands, and lost $600 based on my interventions in boats. (not my proudest moment, when that broke) The time savings vs your available mechanic is also a factor... They tell you it will be 4 weeks, and you have the part....fixing it yourself means you get the boat for 4 more weeks. How do you put a price on that? Sounds like justification for new tools to me.

I second your appreciation for the FAQ, I got the equivalent Teleflex cables for pennies compared to the other prices, and their instructions were very helpful.

This is why we run the forum! Keep telling your spouses...I saved us TONS of money doing this myself....so those JL speakers I just bought....were really free! (that is my story and I'm sticking with it!)
