There is a place near us that sells rides in Sherps. Their favorite season is early or late ice. As the chance of breaking through is great and it's all Minnesotan's worst fear. But these things seem to crawl through broken ice quite well.

They don't move fast on open water, but the fact that they can is pretty impressive. They are stupid expensive too.
 
This was on the Wisconsin river at Spring Green. It can be quite swift and it seemed kinda awkward coming in across the current. Don't know that I would like being inside it on a river
