Pulled and replaced my spark plugs at 72 hours. They look like crap in my opinion, every un-even wear too. IMG_0267.jpg IMG_0268.jpg

Yep, these engines are hard on plugs......... we change out at the beginning of the year, then sometime in the middle when performance starts to drop off or things just dont "feel" right..... We always carry 12 brand new ones on board, and sometimes this season most of them will go into someone elses motors trying to help save their day.....

The rust is a little concerning. Do you fog the engine for storage?

Yea, I do fog them. No water in the oil. I was a little concerned about that too.

Which plugs are the best to use

You got 72 hours out of a set of plugs?? That's a lot more than I'll put on mine. But I do change them every season (about 40-50 hours). Mine look terrible too. These boats are rough on the plugs for sure.

Was the rusty one out of cylinder #3 (counting from bow to stern)? It is infamous for being rusty....

Educate me ..why is this please? t

I have 80 hours on my 212x..60 are mine..I've gone thru 2 sets by choice, a 3rd due to "an issue"

Those plugs look normal. #3 tends to rust and is the most likely plug to break off in the head. It is why it's highly recommended to use anti seize and torque to spec or below and no more. At least the way I understand it is the exhaust valve stays open after engine is shut off and water vapor that is left causes the plug to rust. Or something along those lines. I replace every year.

There is no definitive explanation as to why a lot of use see #3 plug rusting, but @scokill 's explanation is the one that makes the most sense.....the engine has a "natural" at rest stopping point that just happens to be with exhaust valves open on #3...which exposes it to humidity. So now that I'm actually typing this myself for the first time, it makes me wonder.....are our cylinders and valves not moving in unison with one another in pairs? Or are they slightly offset from each other?

Just changed mine for the year today. Yeah, they look a little rough for how little I use the boat each year, it's true. But hey, a few bucks for spark plugs is cheap as F*** to keep these boats running top notch compared to other boats' issues!
