For this price range you can probably go with either. The polks aren't bad at all and will be an improvement over stock speakers as will the kicker. If you had more budget you could get a bigger upgrade with speakers and an amp but it would be 3x or more of upgrading with just these speakers.

I am a Polk fan personally. On top of their very natural sound, they also look a lot cooler than the Kickers IMO. I just put a set of Kicker KS 6x9's in the front doors of my truck (Polks were too deep) and I have never heard such an untolerably bright speaker in my life and I have a pair of Klipsch towers in my basement that are known for their bright sound. I thought something was wrong with them until I did some more research. That said, I think that might be limited to that particular line. There are plenty of people who really like Kickers and nobody could sit and listen to this without their ears hurting.

I just upgraded speakers again. Went from Polk DB651 to some Kicker 8". Now, the Kickers do handle MUCH more but also sound great and get plenty loud for us. The DB651 are nice, but I'd just go with 8" Kickers (you could go with some 7.7" JLAudios but the price difference is quite a bit) if I were to do it again straight out the gate.

There is more work involved, you must make the holes larger, but they fit great in the stock locations. The color of the dark grey grills is perfect for the interior trim and matches like its factory too. I picked up a used amp on here and am putting 125w RMS to each speaker and they get LOUD and very clear. Just need a sub now!

The 8" Kickers were I think $150/pair so they are much more reasonable than JLAudio and while JLA makes a much better speaker, you cannot beat these for the money. I have about $450 in my system w/ the amp/speakers/wiring.

Thanks for the reply guys! I ended up aith the kickers that will be here tomorrow. Hopefully thry are better than the stock!

First question is are you adding any power to them if not you will probably be disappointed in either one as they will sound a little better then stock but with no added power the difference will be minimal. So I have heard the kicker KM 6.5 inch speakers and the the polk db651's on the exact same power set up. The Polks are louder but really lack bass and the kickers will give you an overall fuller sound. I prefer the kickers especially if your not adding a sub. If adding even one sub I would still prefer the Kickers now in a two sub set up it might not matter so much to me as I would take all the bass out of the 6.5 inch speakers any way on that set up.

Yes just a small pyle amp

Can i use the orginal wires or should i get new ones?

I want to do something like this.... but with the progression I'm anticipating I'm freaked out about the battery.

Here's what i'm thinking the progression for this project might look like for my 2017 AR190:

0. new speakers, existing holes, (this thread primarily)
1. New deck needed?
2. small pyle type amp?
3. eventually sub behind the drivers seat, new amp needed?
4. then tower speakers,
5. now i have to think about two batteries to feel safe?
6. does the stator (alternator thingy) have enough juice to charge two batteries?

So my question is, with your line of thinking, when does #5 happen? At what point do you worry about your battery setup in a single battery boat? We cove quite a bit and just swim, and i don't want any on-going problems, and i don't want to be nervous about leaving the stereo on.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but I was assuming this would also be helpful to other folks.

Yes this is also a question I've been thinking about...

I would start off with a second battery. And work from there. You can pick up a new switch on amazon for pretty cheap, and I would add a dual bank charger to charge the batteries.

Orginal wires for aftermarket speakers still ok?

Yes
