I recently bought a used 2016 Yamaha ar190. The front right and rear left speakers were not working and I thought they were “blown”. They were original speakers so I upgraded to JL audio m3’s but the same locations have no sound. Balance and fade settings are correct. What should I do next? Is there an easy fix?

check you wiring. Is there an aftermarket amp installed? If so, is it working?

My experience - a lot of cases where Yamaha wired speakers in series, especially on models where there are speakers on the swim platform (6 total coaxials). Make sure you have all speaker locations connected.

I honestly don’t know enough about sound systems to know if I have an amp or not. Could it be a fuse in the head unit? I have attached a few pictures of my stereo and the wiring behind it. I would appreciate any help and thoughts on the mess of wires in the pictures.

Could be the internal amp in the head unit is blown. One way to check would be to swap the wires on the head unit from right to left, see if the problem follows. If so, you know it's the head unit. If not, then it's likely the wiring somewhere.

See if you can trace those wires through the boat. It looks like all your RCAs are capped or not connected. I think usually people use RCAs to connect to amp, although you can do it with the speaker wires if you have the correct set up. If you have a amp it will most likely be in the battery compartment or or behind the dash in a helm storage compartment if you have one. You should be able to find some old specs on your boat to see if it came with one stock, obviously only helpful if you think the previous owner kept the stock set up. You should be able to find a wiring diagram online to tell you what all the wires in the back of the head unit go to. Basic sound systems are pretty easy to understand/fix/upgrade if you do a little research, shouldn’t be to intimidating if you have a little mechanical know how. If you don’t have a amp and you can’t find any fuses I would say you probably need a new head unit.
