Lots of good info on this site, wanted to my experience with the supercharger on my 2017 Scarab 195 Open. When I bought it I knew it had 216 hours on it and neither the broker or owner had any info on rebuild or replacement. It wasnt yet done. So I assumed $800 or so and I’d need to have it rebuilt. Then in going through my paperwork I saw that my boat was built in July 2017 and my engine was AFB which, in my thinking, was later than AFA and thus I had the newer maintenance free charger and just needed inspection, great!
Wrong. Last week my tech, who is very familiar with these inspected my charger and deemed it good and well within tolerance, but he showed me that right on the front of my motor it said the motor was made in July 2016. So while my boat was completed July 2017, the motor was almost exactly a year older. Not a huge surprise but that made him pull the supercharger. Thanks to the pdf pics posted on this site we could see the nut matched the old one, not new.
He said rebuild kit is about $600 then there is his time. It was cheaper and better to buy a new maintenance free charger from Cecil marine. Just over $900 delivered and in now know I have maint free. I will plan to have him check it annually just to be sure. Took him 20 min to put the new one back in.
Bottom line, look at the stamp on the front of your engine for the build date, not the boat build date and replacement is cheaper and easier than rebuild on these.
