Tower speakers volume knob question

How exactly does that volume knob work?
Is it connected to one of the amps and work as an actual volume control, or is it a variable resistor that the speaker wires run through? Something completely different?

I answered my own question here, but will post it for future reference. The knob has RCA plugs in the back and goes inline between the head unit and amp to vary the level.
