Ok. Transmission just started leaking and I found this crack.
What am I looking at here. How bad is it.

Its probably not gonna stop on its own, lol. There looks to be a couple things going on there. That appears to be the rear trans mount and the tailhousing is what is cracked. The mount itself looks bent to me, so that might need to be straightened out. The tail housing is a relatively easy on/off and can be easily replaced or repaired (welded with the proper equipment (ac/dc tig or aluminum spool gun on a mig).

Is the weld fix something a trans shop will do?
Any estimate on cost?

Hey I have a trans shop to bad I wasn’t close enough to help but that extension housing should be cheap enough that I would not bother trying to have it welded. Need to check the ujoints really good because that’s about the only thing we ever see causing those to crack. What kind of truck Is it ?

It looks like a 2wd Ford. If that’s what it is it shouldn’t be but maybe $200-$250 to do the whole job at least in my part of the country

That’s good news. It’s an 06 F-150.

What specifically do I need to look for at the u joints.
I also found a small amount of oil on floor where the driveshaft meets the rear differential.

It looks like the rear pinion seal is also leaking a little but as far as the ujoints you need to look for play or looseness in the joint. They can can also fail in a way where they get stiff and lock up so probably should pull the shaft out and check them. Have you felt any vibration lately? Usually a bad ujoint will vibrate under load.

Can’t find any play in any joints. Truck is operating as normal.
I have been needing to drive through about a foot of water to get to Marina for about 100 yards. I always drive very slow through.
Could this have caused either problem?

i wouldn’t think the water would hurt anything but probably still should pull driveshaft and check ujoints. They can be froze up where they won’t pivot and you won’t be able to feel any play. I’ve never seen that trans break an extension housing for no reason.

Dropped truck off today.
Extension housing and rear pinion seal needs replaced. $ 401 for entire job.
They could not find anything wrong with ujoints or drive shafts.
They said this is the third cracked housing this year.

Man that’s awesome that’s all it needed.
