Trying to ID part, Scarab 195 Open Fish

Trying to identify this part. Anyone gotten water intrusion from this? I had my boat out yesterday and took on some water which was quite hot when it exited. The motor never shut-off, so i dont think it's a misaligned drive shaft (like another post) suggested. Is this part really necessary (other than for emissions) and does it tend to leak?

That would be your water box or resonator. Essentially a muffler/sound dampener/cooler that uses lake water. Exhaust System Basics | West Marine

It should be well clamped and secured so it doesn't move around and loosen clamps with time.

Is it needed? I'm not an expert on that. But it's fairly simple to make sure it's working... so I would keep it since it does add those benefits. There have been a few reports of them melting because of a lack of flow due to a clogged exhaust system (usually weeds at the intake at the stern). But this is obviously relatively rare... the newer models have these made of aluminum. Should have been the case in the first place to avoid this possible issue.

I would definitely confirm where this water is coming from. If it's from the water box/exhaust system, should be simple to fix by making sure clamps are all tight (you should check all clamps at least once a year in my opinion). Definitely other possibilities for water intrusion like other hoses that go to the hull, exhaust system and the so called "carbon seal" of the drive shaft that exits the hull. But the most common ones are loose clamps from what I've seen.

Thanks. I will hook this up and make sure the clamps are extra tight.
