I am amazed at how far out of line on pricing Popyachts is. And how clueless the salespeople are to this issue.
Point being, the seller may be wanting what they owe, or what they think a boat is worth. Then P0pyachts puts on their 10%, and now the boat is listed above what MSRP was when the boat was new. I have found this especially true with folks that are selling 2010-2014 242 Limited S models.
I bring this up to the PY rep that emails me boat listings all the time, and I ask if they know the MSRP of these boats when new, if they did, they should feel ashamed even offering these up. Are people that clueless? She says, it leaves room to barter. I said, go pound sand.
The pricing of those boats was considerably less than the 2015+ boats with the new hull design. So they are encouraged to sell their used 242LS (with the same name) at a price near the MSRP when it was new. News flash, boats have never appreciated in value. And comparing a pre-2015 to a 2015+ is not a fair comparison. I love the guys selling a used 212x quoting the price of a new one at $80K. OMG, shoot me in the eye.
If anything, I will use Search Tempest, as listed above, or use Popyachts to find boats available by region, then go find the C-list posting with search tempest. As the seller is still allowed to try to sell the boat on their own.
Another thing throwing this used boat market off, are the folks that purchased a boat on a 15 year loan. They are upside down the entire time they own the boat. I was dealing on a 2013 212x with a nice guy close to me. He said that he still owes $40K on the boat and can't take anything less. Honestly, he has worse financial issues than he is admitting if that were true. That boat was $46,500 MSRP 6 years ago in the fall of 2012. Add on dealer prep, fees, taxes and possibly a 5-year YES contract and it may have been $50 out the door.
There is no way he only paid off $10K. If he did, he's screwed as that is a $30K boat today. No, it's not a $41,000 boat as listed on Popyachts.
Sorry to vent, but these boat listing sites are all over the board on values. I have been very blunt with a few sellers. I said if you care to list your boat for what you think you should get based on New boat prices, and the market bears you a buyer, good luck. But I am not going to be upside down the day I sign the line on a used boat. Taking the hit should be on the guy that decided to buy it brand new off the lot, not me.
The last beef I have is those that use NADA incorrectly. (sorry, it's usually the seller) NADA pricing is based on actual sales of these boats as reported by dealerships. It does not take into consideration used sales, which are actually usually less than dealers. So they are high to begin with. Also, Yamaha boat values have an asterisk next to them stating very clearly, that this price includes a trailer. There are also no engine options on Yamaha's. so the base value is what you have to go on. No, you don't choose the 320-500hp engine option on a 212x as it has 360hp. Because the engine option now adds $15,000 to the value making a used 2014 212x worth more than it's MSRP when new. Some sellers don't get that.
So rant over, but if anyone has a 2012-2013, 242 Limited S, or 212x of the same vintage for sale and want to sell it near NADA pricing, please message me. I have the wife's blessing to buy a nice used boat. So GAME ON!
