So I ordered new wear rings for my 03 sr230. For housing 003-508. Googled replacement plastic wear ring for 003-508 and got sent a 003-522. More research shows that this should be right. If I slide the wear ring over the impeller there is excessive play. Do the plastic liners compress when installed in the housing? I don't want to remove the old one without knowing for sure.

Additionally, i would like to understand if there a specific orientation for installation? How do I figure out which side goes in the housing?

Thanks,
Roy

I wasn't aware any of the Yamaha models ever had replaceable plastic wear rings.... @Cobra Jet Steering LLC might know....

I buy a new housing with the replaceable wear ring from S B T in Clearwater Fl been using them for many years and thousands of hours, I love them and no damn pump rattle on the trailer but now Yamaha 2019 pumps employ a replaceable plastic wear ring as for some replacement for older boats I can't say yes or no on that as I have no info on that. I did see his post and wondered if Yamaha was sending out new wear ring sections to eliminate the dissimilar metal issues with the regular ones. I suppose it is possible.

One thing I know is that you must change the wear ring pump section to switch over to plastic rings there is no ring you are able to just install in your existing pump liner section. by itself.

I have done in in my 190 - use the wear ring with a delrin plastic insert. Works great albeit not as durable, but changign the inser tis cheap.
The wear ring with plastic insert is a different part than the OEM wear ring. The inserts (at least for the 1.8 pump pre-2019) are not directional, but may need to be put in a freezer and take some convincing to fit in the wear ring segment.

didn't you need to change the actual pump section for the ring since the metal rings are not replaceable,

Yes, the wear ring segment (for use with the plastic insert) is different than the OEM wear ring.
(pre-2019)

I changed the pump section yes, aftermarket housing model: #66V-51312-01-94. I am now replacing the plastic liners. My concern was that they needed to be positioned a certain way. Measuring showed them not to be tapered....but i was just looking for some words of experience from someone who has done it. It's a 2003 SR230.

FYI I just received the Cobra Jet cleanout plug EZ locks, got all prepper to drill the hole, and found them to have already been drilled out. Guess the previous owner wanted to keep them. Oh well, made the "install" super easy.

I use a press to install my liners, I set the housing up on blocks and press in the new one while it pushes out the old one. For the first one I just place the section on a flat plate and press in the new one with another flat steel plate on top of it slowly pressing it in the housing.

Thanks everyone, I got them in, just a bit of paranoia to get it right.
