Context: My wife and I decided to drive up to Fort Bragg to take a rail bike (electric assisted bikes that ride on rail road tracks) tour through the forest. we stayed at a hotel in Ukiah. fort Bragg is on the coast about 200 miles north of San Francisco, Ukiah is inland about 60 miles away.
We had never been to Fort Bragg and had only driven through Ukiah. That stated, we trusted the navigation system in the car and ended up driving through the forest along the coast for the last 70 miles. this added two hours to the road trip up but we got to see a lot more than the freeway so we didn’t regret it even though we did end up missing the rail car tour. We thought the tour started closer to Ukiah not Fort Bragg. We would have made the tour had we gone through Ukiah first instead of along the coast. We will return to complete the mission, especially now that we have a $260 credit with the rail bike tour company, Skunk Train.
While in Fort Bragg We walked the downtown area, had lunch and decided to visit the “World Famous Glass Beach”. Glass Beach gets its name from the pieces of glass and porcelain that are embedded in the sand there. This was basically a dump that got filled after the 1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco, the glass broke up and washed back on shore. Yes, they promote a previous dump site as a tourist attraction. The beach/cove itself I was packed but there is still plenty of other coastline to enjoy.
