About to do my first oil change on my 2008 AR230 since I have purchased it. I dont know what oil is in it now, and I want to go with a full synthetic. I am going to do the complete oil change and get as much out as possible by taking the extra steps. I just want to know what oil I should use for the marine environment. Thanks!

There are numerous opinions on what oil is best so you will have to weed through all the opinions to see what makes you comfortable. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and change the oil & filter at the begin of each season.

Mobil 1 that you would buy at an Advance Auto or is there a Marine version?

10W30 here. May go thicker, never thinner

10W 30 here. Valvoline synthetic blend.

I've always been a Valvoline guy.

another vote for mobil one.

Klotz Skicraft x4.

Is what I use in my boat. It is a category five (paraffin based) synthetic, and mobile 1 is a category 3 (oil based) synthetic. Going from memory did all the research two year ago.

It is a pwc watercraft specific oil for the marine environment

I am sticking with Yamaha Lube 10W-40. Plan on changing every other year since I don't put that many hours on my motors during the season.

Previous owner always used Valvoline 10W-40 Conventional, so that's what I've used. But looks like I'll be switching over to the Mobil 1 10W-40, because I'm not finding the Valvoline in the large jug here now (only the quart size).

I use Mobile 1 but you could use any oil that meets the Yamaha specification...which is pretty much any engine oil on the market in the recommended weight.

I run the 0W40 mobil 1 european formula. The boat likes it. Cam.

Not so much: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/a2316/4232672/

Briefly, there are two types of "synthetic" oils on the market. Group IV oils consist of molecules that are synthesized from simpler chemical compounds. This lets the chemical engineers "tune" the characteristics of a lubricant to exact specifications. These oils flow more freely at extreme low temperatures and don't break down at very high temperatures. As a side benefit, they generally can be specified one or two grades lighter than a mineral oil, which consumes less energy as friction inside the engine and saves fuel. These are superior products, and command a premium price. Mobil 1 is a good example of a high-end Group IV. Group III lubricants are made from reprocessed petroleum products normally left over after making crude oil into gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil and other products. They're more modestly priced, and have many of the desirable characteristics of the higher-priced spread. In much of the world outside the USA, Group III-based lubricants are not permitted to be marketed as "synthetic." Castrol Syntec is a good example of this type.

I still believe the Klotz is a better oil. It is designed and formulated specifically for a marine environment PVC 4-stroke motor.

Mobil 1 is a great oil. I used it in all my vehicles and toys, prior to switching everything to Klotz.
But, Mobil-1 is not listed as a marine oil, for whatever reason. If it was easy to certify for marine, I am sure corporate Mobil would market it.

Personally I think if people use Yamaha lube as specified, the motor should run well forever in theory.

It is all about personal choice. Don't want to argue. Someone asked what oil people are using.

I was just addressing your statement about mobil one being a class III and not full synthetic. That's incorrect.

What I would like to know, not that it is that important, is where Yamaha buys their oil?? I might just call Yamaha today and see if they can answer that question.
