Eat some tex-mex, drive to Galveston and have some fresh seafood, enjoy the warm weather, maybe go to the dog races that are right along the highway on the way to Galveston. If you don't have time to go to Galveston you could go over to Kemah. They have several nice restaurants and a little fairground with a few rides and carnival games if you have kids with you. The main reason we like Kemah, besides the great seafood, is that there is a large marina of pleasure boats and it's at a mouth of a river/channel. So as your sitting there enjoying your meal you can watch all the boat traffic if it's a pretty day.
What part of Houston are in you, how much free time will you have?
Visit the NASA space center (although I heard it's more geared towards kids now)
go to Galveston, not anything spectacular as far as scenery, eat at Gaidos on the seawall or the wharf on the back side of the island, they have a couple of neat historical tours from the hurricane in 1800's (almost every building on the island was washed away)
walk next to alligators at Brazos Bend state park
history - visit San Jacinto monument (where Houston defeated Santa Anna for liberty) and the Battleship Texas is right next door, (you can ride the bolivar ferry (free) across from Galveston)
They have a large Vietnamese community so if you like SE Asian food you can find a good traditional spot
While I like to think we are friendlier than most As with any big city, be careful, you can quickly end up in an area where life is cheap.
Thanks for the suggestions. We are downtown right nest to the Toyota Center. Rockets played there last night. Some friends suggested San Antonio, and while I' love to see the Alamo and River walk, I don' think I'm going to have the full day that I feel is needed to dedicate to it. Galveston is definitely on the radar. Anything around water is always welcome. We walked a few miles yesterday outside when we got here. It was wonderful to be outside without having to wear a coat. The area reminds of Atlantic City a little.
I must say i find it impressive how well the city has recovered from the hurricanr and flooding.
If you're slightly interested in history, Johnson Space Centre (the Saturn V rocket is amazing to see in person), San Jacinto monument, and Battleship Texas are definitely worth seeing.
You should definitely find a place that serves good BBQ.
If you have half a day free, I would definitely take the time to check out a couple of open houses in either Katy or Woodlands. It is one of those things that you do not know what you are missing until you see it with out own eyes.
They way, I did with my wife, is that we looked at our equity on our house in the Northeast and then went to check out houses that were on that price range...... Fast forward 7 years now and we are buying our second home in DFW.
I second going to Ship Channel to see Battleship Texas. fun experience. Flaying Saucer downtown is a fun bar to try some beer variety. Taste of Texas if you want to splurge on a mean steak.
I second the Natural History Museum, even though I'm not a huge fan of museums... It's pretty impressive and probably pretty close to where you are staying.
We decided on The Flying Dutchman. We're right on the water at the mouth of the river. Even though it's night there's still a fair amount of boat traffic. SeaTow just went out, hope whoever it is, they're ok. My daughter is sending pictures from home. 5 inches of snow and counting.
