Also....can anyone confirm/deny the black box functionality touted here? Seems like a stretch in a boat.

Cops may have seized something (memory card? entire Actia head unit?), but no idea if it'll actually tell them where the owner's been.

This image was posted on one of the FB groups as well. One of the comments stated that the GPS info all get deleted on a power cycle and that the image can't be true. I can't confirm if it's correct that the info gets deleted when the system gets turned off.

If he has an add on Garmin (any gps map brand)....it would be simple as by default they save your routes (very helpful feature actually)

Right, and I doubt a sheriff would know that anyway and would grab any electronic info possible. Useless doesn't mean unseizeable :p

I don't think the GPS data would reside on the boat - but possibly there's a GPS id number that you could use to get information from a database? Probably easier to get a warrant for the drivers phone though.

A bigger question - how do you rip a hole that big in the front of the boat and still make it back to get on the trailer?

if true, probably a third party GPS. I guess he must have kept that up on plane even after the impact and come into the lift a little hot, lol.

Most handheld and road GPS units have x miles of tracking history that is visible and in many cases can't be disabled. I've seen no readily available evidence of that kind of tracking history on the Yamaha/Actia units, but it's entirely possible.

Also......Does it bother anyone else that there is a missing word in the header comment?!?!?

I've made mistakes, but I do usually own up them.......The missing "to" is just wildly infuriating to me for some reason.

I'm fairly certain this whole thing is made up, but the discussion points are interesting :D

That's the only way a guy could make it back with that kind of hole in the boat - keep it ripping. Even still - one big wave and you're done.

Is there a requirement that the boat owner/operator report an accident that causes $X in damage or if a navigation buoy involved? I’ve hit a dock hard and enough to put a hole in hull about the size of a new quarter that cost several thousand to repair and when the sheriff saw me putting a duct tape patch over the hole all he said was “bummer”.

To LEOs the question probably isn't "if you caused damage to the marker" - it was probably more "how drunk were you when you hit it..."

How would they prove the owner/operator was drunk at all?

Yes, there are a number of criteria that require mandatory reporting - not sure how tightly its followed, but helps guide their rulemaking process. I had an incident several years ago and reported it, never heard anything about it.

Federal law requires the operator or owner of a recreational vessel to file a boating accident report with the State reporting authority if the recreational vessel is involved in an accident that results in any of the following:
  • A person dies
  • A person is injured and requires medical treatment beyond first aid
  • A person disappears from the vessel under circumstances that indicate death or injury
  • Damage to vessels and other property totals $2,000 (lower amounts in some states and territories).
  • The boat is destroyed.
Report Timelines:
  • Within 48 hours if a person, dies within 24 hours, is injured and requires medical treatment beyond first aid, or disappears from the vessel under circumstances that indicate death or injury.
  • Within 10 days of the occurrence or death if earlier reporting is not required.

VDMBWD!!!!
Go fast when it’s safe!

How would they prove the owner/operator was drunk at all?
No idea, but some people are stupid enough to self report.

Wouldn't a warrant be required to search and remove any equipment from the boat ? Story seems questionable.

Some Spectrum gelcoat paste will fix that right up............do they have 5-gallon buckets?
