I am new to the forum and have been researching boats like crazy. I have never owned a boat but I am going to own one soon.

I have narrowed things down to Yamaha 242 Limited S E, Cobalt CS3 and Sea Ray 230SLX.

It seems that Yamaha has steadily increased their prices. To the point that other boats are competitive. Sure list prices - no comparison, but street prices - I can have a nice Cobalt about the same money.

I still like the jet boat design for Texas lakes - not if but when the water gets low.

Like the all in pricing.

What am I missing

Comments?

I'm missing something here. What Cobalt are you finding for a comparable price to a Yamaha? Cobalts are the Rolls Royces of the lake and they're priced accordingly. If you can find a new 24' Cobalt for $80K, you better buy it!

Check out the CS1 and CS3

I am trying to figure out the differences between their models. Looks like nice stuff.

Yamaha has definitely gone up in price the past few years especially in the top end 24' models. They've entered into a different market than they were a few years ago. 5 years ago it was all about versatility and value. Now they still offer the versatility but the value is quickly shrinking. Yamaha's top of the line boat 5 years ago was 51k

I assume you are talking to Phil Dill about a Yamaha. What are they quoting you for a 242 LS E?

List price plus setup, etc. So with setup, taxes, etc - Right at $75K out the door.

Tough choice. I'd buy a comparable Yamaha over a Sea Ray any day of the week. Cobalts are a different story. My only concern is that there isn't as much functional space in that size Cobalt. Since Yamaha has such low profile engines, there is much more room. Like a 23' I/O compares more to a 21' Yamaha. I'd check out both boats in the showroom just to get a feel. Also, mention this site to Toby, the dealership manager at Phil Dill. He's sold a lot of boats to us here. Might cut you a deal.

I am still leaning towards the Yamaha but the Cobalt pricing is compelling.

Thanks for the hook up with Toby.

Thanks,
D.

Sea Ray looks pretty good on paper. How do you guys compare it to the Yamaha?

FYI - I bought my custom ordered 2016 Cobalt R5 (25' 8") with an aftermarket aluminum trailer for $85k, that was the boat show price, MSRP on the boat was $110k and the trailer was $5k.

That pricing is fairly accurate as I remember the R5's going for around $85k so $69k for a CS3 is not bad but they will still want to throw dealer fees and a trailer on there so it will likely be closer to 75k or more out the door. I got quotes on left over 2016 limted e serries for $57k out the door just last month so there can still be a big price difference I know on a 17 they will not be as willing to deal but I would bet there is still a $10k difference which is still a pretty good amount especially if someone was paying cash but if financing for 15 years or something crazy like that the difference does't seem as much. I would agree though that the pricing is close enough to some of the higher end boat guys now they are def worth considering.

Yeah - comparing list on other boats to yamaha doesn't really work.

Street price vs. street price is key.

I am thinking I need to wait until the 2018 Yamahas are rolling and find me a 2017 in the middle of winter that is still new on the lot.

No way I would pay list plus fees I would keep shopping or wait for the 18's to start hitting as you mentioned. Dealers were heavily discounting the 16 E-serries boat over the past month or so but that has made inventory start to disappear. Every dealer is different just because one won't negotiate another will. I just bought a 2017 AR240 out the door for $51,100 (MSRP is $54,449+freight, prep and taxes) that includes taxes and fees plus the 4 year warranty so some dealers will negotiate even on a current model year as well.

Don't need to wait that long. Summer boat show, end of July. Big savings to be had!

That looks like a good price. I need to work all the dealers - list plus $3500 in fees seems nuts.

Not the best time of year to buy right now.

Thanks for the point of reference,
D.

You know it - need to get the dates to at least go look at them all.

Did the $51K also include sales tax?

Tax is 6.25% in Texas.

I got my 242 SE in Oct used with 10 hrs and upgraded JL audio system for $55k. I wasn't even shopping for a boat but couldn't pass it up.:winkingthumbsup"
