I'm looking at buying my first boat and have been looking for a couple of years, I backed out on a 19ft Bayliner 9 months ago because I found out it was kept outside it's whole life and didn't seem like a the right fit. I have found a leftover new 2019 Yamaha SX195 at a local dealer. My question is should I consider new as my first boat? Trying to decide if a jet boat is enough power for the family, will likely have 6-8 people (a couple are kids) on it most days. It seems like a good deal with the current Yamaha incentives and $3000 cheaper than the 2020 model. I have a good amount of experience on my father in-laws 19ft Caravelle I/O driving, docking, taking in and out, etc.. I want to stay under 20 feet so it fits in my garage and is easy to tow. I live in Missouri and towing to a lake will be around a 2 hour drive, just wondering what people think. Maybe I'm just getting cabin fever with the stay at home order and I should be patient to find a used one but I know we as a family love to go boating and hate relying on the in-laws to go. Any feedback good or bad is welcome.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of great info here.

I have a 212X and 8 people starts to get crowded in my boat. I’d be worried that you may not have enough power to do water sports with all those people.

I’m sure people with the 19ft boats will give you some specific feedback on the boat you’re looking at.

I will provide you one quote I’ve read many times on this forum - “buy your second boat first.” I think it’s good advice.

:Welcome: you've come to the right place for pertinent info....as far as 6 to 8 people on a 190/195 I would say that it would be tight and depending on how big the folks you are going to have onboard you may be over USCG weight limits....for the 195 it's 1160 lbs if memory serves me right and that includes equipment. so if you have 8 on board 1160lbs avgs out to about 145 lbs per person plus equipment....

We will have 2-4 adults and potentially 4 kids. I think we will be okay on the weight. The specs say 8/1600 on the 2019 model. I'm hoping the super charged engine is enough power to pull tubers and skiers. But that's why I'm here just looking for info and feedback from people who have them?. My other question is $30k a good price on a new 2019 SX195? We don't need the tower so the AR doesn't make sense. The bench seating looks odd to me as well, wife said she wants the captain chair but I'm not sure there is enough leg room there.

I have a 19 AR195. 4 adults and 2 teenage boys for our largest outing. No problem with room. But make sure to put all the weight in the back during water sports. We had one adult and one kid up front and the boat was a dog.

But I’m at 5800’

We’ve also done 3 adults with 3 kids. Also no problem. The only time it was an issue was getting in and out of the ski locker. But seating wise it was fine. But I have a bench on the port side and not a captains chair so that helps having a bench.

More than 6 or 7 bodies, it’ll be a bit tight.

My wife thought she wanted the chair versus the bench. Now that we have the bench, she’s glad we do as it adds a seat. I also ALWAYS put up the bimini for the sunblock. Unsure how much the SX actually covers.

But the SX would be a TON easier getting in a 7’ high garage door.

@steve0617 Thanks for the info! I do have concerns about the power when fully loaded but I think that would be the same in a I/O.

It is weird to sit sideways on the port side and not face forward? I like the idea of more seating and storage space as well.

How wide is the boat on the trailer? I believe the beam is 8'2", hard to tell from pictures if the trailer is much wider.

What made you get the AR, I'm guessing the tower? Did you buy new and would you do it again?

Apologies for all the questions, trying to make the right first choice lol.

It’s not weird to sit sideways. That was my wife’s concern but she adapted. There is no storage under the bench except the two small Coleman coolers we bought that fit perfectly height wise. Gets them out of the way.

Figure 9’ wide of you’re a perfect backer. If you need extra space, figure the trailer is 10’ wide. It’s the fenders that are the width, not the boat.

We got the AR cause I liked the tower look better. Plus I liked the sun coverage better than the SX.

I bought new at the 2019 boat show. I never had a demo drive. I would buy new again but I would definite take a water test drive to make sure it’s the boat for you.

I never expected the cavitation on take off. That surprised me. Would have been good to know that ahead of time.

I bought our AR195 new last year. It was our first boat purchase. I've driven our friends wakes boats over the years but I wouldn't consider myself very experienced. I have no regrets on buying new first. Would do it again. Hurts when you put that first scratch in it, but it's all part of the process.

We have had 5 adults averaging 190lbs a 13 yr old and a 9 yr old for a total of 7 and for the most part everyone was comfy. A few suffles to get to to stuff under seats bit nothing too bad. Towed a 3 person tube with three adults no problem. Havent had any issues with not enough power yet.

We wanted the bench. Extra kid seating and storage under. We put some plastic tubs with lids under it with sunscreen, glasses and a first aid kit. Good for guest storage for phones and such as well.

We also wanted the tower. Expected to toa stuff and wanted to be able to wakeboard and surf behind it. Plus I need room for extra speakers and racks for the boards.

Thanks for all the great info, sounds like the boat will work for our needs but might not fit in the garage with the wife's SUV.

Time to make sure the financials add up, this covid stuff makes me a little nervous on the job front. Hopefully it resolves itself soon and we can pull the trigger!

Welcome!

One thought on the tower: we also like that you don't have to worry about people grabbing it as a hand hold (like you would with just a bimini top). Especially while boarding or disembarking, being able to grab that tower can be really nice...

I know, not a deal maker or breaker, but something to consider.

We crammed my explorer in with it.
