1.8L Ribbon Delete (2017 212X)

Was able to get out this evening to see if there were any performance increases from my ribbon delete.
Before the ribbon delete the most I got out of it was 46 mph @ around 7300 rpm.
Tonight with 3 people in the boat I finally hit that 50 mph I've been looking for @ around 7500 rpm.
I have no doubt that with favorable conditions and one person in the boat I'll now be able to see over 50 mph.
So the ribbon delete is definitely the real deal and I was one happy boater to finally see the 50 on the dash.

That may be the best news I have read on here since I bought mine. Fastest I have gotten so far was 48 with 2 adults and a kid on board (no idea of rpms.) Hopefully I will see similar results as you. Maybe I'll pack the tools I need and give it a shot while at the lake tomorrow!

It's difficult to compare...especially within a few MPH. Temperature, water conditions, wind, elevation, etc all would have an impact to make a comparison near impossible. I'm assuming all comparisons would be GPS with +/- .5 MPH accuracy at best you are talking 48.5 compared to 49.5 (for example if someone hit 50 MPH GPS with-.5 MPH, and someone was 48 +.5 MPH.

As far as the backwards mounted bolt I came across this situation and I used a hacksaw ( can also use a dremel with a cutting blade) to cut a slot in the bolt and used a wrench to turn the nut with a screwdriver keeping the bolt from turning.

Would translate into 1 (maybe 2) mph gain - that would be a great result.
Noticeably better mid-range if you pay attention.
4mph is not realistic with ribbon delete alone, other factors in play - sure, anything can happen. Just don't expect more than 1 mph gain in top speed.

Yeah I don’t disagree with you. I definitely did have 4 mph increase over what I’ve ever seen before but there are a number of factors that could play a part in that. But I think the rpm increase is less of a mystery and real results. Rpm increase for me was closer to 250 but still in that 200-300 range. Bottom line is it’s a great mod for the price and regardless of where how it came to be I’m very happy to now know my boat can perform as promised.

I have pulled several ribbons out now and I haven't had to use a screw, in fact my ribbons remained pristine during the process. I use two needle nose plier sets. Tape up the tips with rubber or vinyl based tape, gently grab the rubber insert in an easy spot with one set, and pull it out slightly to grab a better bite with the second set. Repeat this hand over hand process until you walk out the ribbon about 3/8" of an inch at that spot, and then pick a spot 90º offset from the first location. Walking it out at that location should quickly allow you to remove it fully by hand.

My ribbons went from my boat into the trash so the screw was the quickest easiest if you don't care. But good tip if you want to save them.

I did the same thing. Both are still perfect

Both are the same part numbers. All 17 NA 1.8s are the same

Isn’t there two different size rings. I have a California engine and I think it’s bigger if I remember right when I did some research. I’m planning on doing it this winter so I haven’t bought the kit yet. I also read here somewhere about the intake mount separating is that only on supercharger models.

So it seems the only thing that is difficult about this is removing the air filters.... which I was unable to do last winter. But it was Dark and I was in a hurry. Searched you tube and only found an AR240 video which is close but not the same.

In my experience the tone changes to somewhat more "throaty" but the volume of noise is not much different. In my experience changing/removing the OEM filter box does increase dBs substantially, the ribbon itself - not much.
A lot of the noise comes from the pump/wear ring in those boats. The best defense is to stuff the bulkheads (on top of - engine hatch seal - number one noise reduction mod).
I started using old ballast bags pumped with air in the bulkheads (I also injected polyurethane foam inside the pseudo-double hull and bow, but that's a different story). My boat is now probably one of the quieter Yamahas in existence! Just ask @jcyamaharider, lol, he took a ride with us recently.

Works wonders. I've been slowly filling in all the voids in the hull/bulkheads I can get access to, also pulling cup holders, speakers etc.


Need to do little at the time, don't want to pour a large volume as things can heat up.

For the biggest spaces under the hull cap - I'm using foam pillows as space fillers, works very well
