2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 finally arrived!

Yeah, we sold our 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe with 90k miles on it for $13.5K and it was still under the power train warranty. The only issue we had with it was a seat occupancy sensor and the usual maintenance (there might have been one recall in there covered by Hyundai....can't recall).

The Ioniq is quiet and fun to drive....I love the immediate acceleration with nothing but wind noise! Its like taking off on a fast roller coaster (one of those ones that launch you from the station).

So far I have only one complaint - you cannot set it to 1 pedal driving permanently, you can set it to level 3 regen, but 1 pedal needs to be turned on each trip. I hope this is something they can change over the air with a future update as its just a software setting. There are paddle shifter on the steering wheel that make it easy to switch regen levels....just wish it would hold the 1 pedal setting.

That should hopefully be an easy fix with software, I can see how that can get old fast. 1 pedal driving is the best!

I’m trying to soak in as much EV knowledge as I can for our future purchase. Have recently read that the 2023 Ioniq 5’s have a pre-heat function on the battery to decrease charge times in cold weather!

Rivians also have a "precondition" setting.

Better than the "sport mode" with "gears" that are labeled in my wifes Rogue.......It has a CVT in it. It's all made up electronic trickery for fake "shift points"......So weird.

Nice looking car Julian. We purchased a Model Y LR 7 seater back in Sept. We have almost 12k miles on it and are loving the car including some winter time road trips. The 326 miles advertised range ends up being less than 250 when the temp gets below 15-20 degrees. The heat pump helps but it's really the batteries that need to be heated which sucks the juice. The computer does a really good job finding superchargers and planning the trip. 0-60 in 4.8s is amazing. For a 2k software update they dangle the carrot of 0-60 in 4.2s. If 4.8s starts to get hum drum I might just give Elon a little more money. My only gripes are the mirrors are small so it's difficult to see out the sides when changing lanes. This was done for aerodynamics I suppose. The blinker function was a little hard to get used to and after a software update it's better than before. One pedal driving was easy to get used and since we have a fleet of 4 cars with our kids I haven't found it difficult to switch back and forth.

Take a look at high quality convex mirrors with defrost and anti glare. Will solve your problem.

Yup....pre heat and they also have a heat pump which reduces electricity use to heat the cabin. Thanks for reminding me of this, it is something I need to look up before I get on this road trip!

Our Santa Fe had 3 rows of seats....we almost never used them (like I don't recall ever using them). Driving for Uber I have used the 3rd row of seats in my Audi for UberXL, but not many people are up for becoming an Uber driver!

We used it twice and it probably won't get used much after that. Anyone over 5'10" will have trouble back there. It's not so much the seating space as it is the foot room. My kids have gigantic feet and my youngest daughter who is in 9th grade and growing like a weed (5'7") has men's size 10 shoes. They just don't fit. She had to take her shoes off to get back in there. The middle row and front row seats need to move forward and stay forward when someone sits back there. It makes everything tight. My thought on spending the extra 3k at the time was we could get 7 people up to the lake (18min drive), or avoid using two cars to drive downtown to a restaurant, but honestly it's kind of embarrassing trying to fit an adult back there. If you have kids between the ages of 5 and 12 then it would work well. I ordered the car in Nov 2021 and it took 10months to get it and my kids grew too fast. Doing it over I would have gotten the 5 seater. The good news is that the way the seats fold you lose very little cargo space.

So I completed my first long road trip in the EV - from Raleigh to Tampa (668 miles) and back. The way down didn't go as well as the way back---but that was due to human error! I had somehow accidently set the car to max out at 50% charging on a DC charger. It took me a couple of chargers to realize it was the cars fault (mine) not the charger. So the way down was longer than it should have been.

The way back went as follows:

1. DRIVE 8:47-9:59 to EA charger. 1:12, 68 miles (Tampa traffic)
2. CHARGE 9:59-10:24 EA 25 min
3. DRIVE 10:24-12:29 to EvGo Charger near Jacksonville 2:05, 132 miles
4. CHARGE 12:29-1:09 EvGo charger 40 min (at lunch at Pizza hut)
5. DRIVE 1:09-3:02 to EA Charger. 1:52, 141 miles
6. CHARGE 3:02-3:36 EA 34 min
7. DRIVE 3:36-5:59 Drive to EA charger, 2:22 , 171 miles
8. CHARGE 5:59-6:44 EA 44 min, (dinner - Salad from Walmart)
9. DRIVE 6:44-9:25 Home 2:41, 163 miles.

At total of 10:12 driving, and 2:23 minutes charging. Normally this trip would take me around 11 hours and would cost $97 in gasoline. This trip cost me $21.12 (16.45 at the EvGo near Jacksonville, and 4.67 at an EA station that was running slow and went over my free 30 min charge time - I may call them to get that refunded because their charger was running really slowly, and shouldn't have taken that long). There isn't a convenient EA (Electrify America) location in the Jacksonville area on my route - which is why I used EvGO there.

The 44 min EA charge at step 8 should have been more like 25 minutes, but the charger I was on was running slow. I stopped there on the way down, and it ran slow then too. This is one of the challenges with charging stations....sometimes they aren't working right - apps like "Plugshare" rate them so you can get an idea of how well they work. I used it because it was free for me for the 1st 2 years of the car ownership.

So overall, a pretty uneventful trip. Took an extra 90 minutes, but I ate and took a couple of naps, so no biggie.

How do you like Ubering in the Audi? I'm considering making a comeback tour now that the pandemic is over and I could use the extra cash to service some debt we've racked up.

It is a little heavy on the gas usage, but really comfortable! Driving uber comfort I'm netting about $25/hour.

I gotta call this out - how did you get from Tampa to Jacksonville in 132 miles? We made that drive several times and always had to stop in Ocala to recharge. Shortest route, generally speaking is 200 miles.
