Bought my first boat! New 2019 212X Owner Joining Team JetBoaters

Well, nothing is "WATERPROOF", just water resistant to a certain extent. Im sure modern trailers/vehicles are fine, but there's always a small chance you could short something out. I always unplug mine. Just saves me the worrying.

Im not sure which trailer lights you have, but an old trick my Dad taught me is to just completely remove the bottom part of the brake lights. (to deliberately let water in). Reasoning behind is water will find its way in one way or another, so having a bigger hole just lets the water out quicker. I noticed on my trailer when i bought it, one of the lights had the bottom completely off (maybe lost by accident) while the other brake light was fully intact. Guess which one i ended up having corrosion issues with - the fully intact one. Because water would sit in there for longer.

Food for thought LOL. Most modern systems should be okay though.
Funny you mention this. I got out on the water yesterday for the maiden voyage. As I watched my buddy back down the trailer (after sitting parked for ~3 hours or so) a ton of water dumped out of one of the lights. Like you said, it had been sitting for hours! Would definitely make more sense to find a way to let it drain out quickly.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS turn the engines off when someone is in the water behind the boat! You never know what might happen. If a throttle is bumped, those jets could almost cut you in half.

And BTW, congrats on the new boat... she is a beauty! :Welcome:
Will do... thank you!

Congrats on the new boat! I also live in Orlando so reach out if you have some questions or need suggestions of where to boat. I boat in salt water frequently and over 6 years and 2 Yamahas I've never disconnected the trailer lights. I rinse boat off when home and never had an issue. Definitely turn motor off when people are boarding. Ive had a couple ropes sucked up and it has to be literally next to the intake. I would designate someone to watch the rope and over emphasize the importance of the rope getting under the boat. It usually happens when someone isnt paying attention.
Good to know about the rope, I'll definitely be looking to avoid running it over and designating someone as lookout is a good idea.

Sure I wouldn't mind some suggestions. What are some of the best party island spots? We went out on Lake Jessup yesterday. Going to Butler chain Sunday. My buddy says he sees a lot of folks on Lake Conway, but when I checked all the launch sites say online they are "resident only." I've heard New Smyrna intercostal has better conditions and a better sandbar than the Cape. What do you think?

@slickstick, congrats, and great looking boat!

What everyone said here is spot-on so far; you don't need ez plugs, always turn engines off if you're walking away from the helm, and always keep a sharp knife on board... at some point you'll suck up a tow rope or dock line, and you will likely need to reach into the cleanout port and saw through it if it's wound around the impeller shaft (been there). TIP - You can minimize this risk with dock lines by cutting them shorter than the distance between your front cleat and the intake grates.

If you're a new boater, I would not recommend unplugging your trailer plug - I think it will cause you more issues than the risk of a burnt out bulb that is easy to replace. The reason is that your trailer plug is critical to going in reverse. Trailer breaks work as a result of part of the trailer tongue sliding back when there's pressure, to actuate the hydraulic brakes. This happens automatically anytime you break, the pressure from your vehicle slowing and the trailer tongue getting compressed, creates corresponding pressure that is applied to the trailer brakes. It would also happen if you backed up your vehicle in reverse, the trailer brakes would lock up - IF not for a signal from your vehicle which goes through the trailer plug when you're in reverse that tells the trailer brakes to not engage.

If you disconnect your trailer plug, but then try going in reverse, the trailer brakes will lock up. There is a manual way to disengage the trailer brakes for this purpose, a small clip that hangs off the side of your trailer tongue that can be put in... but then you need to do this every time, and also remember to REMOVE it when driving on the highway, or you will have NO trailer brakes.

Therefore, save yourself more potential headaches, by just leaving your trailer plug, plugged in. :)

I'm a first year boater like yourself. I was looking at your pictures and it looks like you've got the stock bow roller, and no steering upgrades. In my opinion, the most valuable first upgrades to me as a new boater were in this order:

1. Trailer Guide Posts: makes it WAAAY easier to load the boat back onto the trailer, plus you can see them sticking out of the water. Low speed steering and thus loading our boats is very difficult, but this helps a bit. You can get lighted ones like I did, so you can see easier at night too!
2. Cobra Jet Steering Kit: The only upgrade that actually helps the boat steer better at low and high speeds. Our boats need all the help they can get in this department.
3. Bow Roller: One of the easiest/cheapest upgrades. The stock yellow bow roller scratches up the bow of the boat, so replace this sooner than later.

You can see links/install videos for what I'm talking about, in my footer below. Make sure to make a checklist for yourself before taking it out the first time, don't forget to put the cleanout plugs, drain plug in, and release the transom straps!! :)
Thanks for the pointers. I feel like this boat handles amazing, if the Cobra Jet Steering makes it even better that would be impressive.

I've seen the scratches with the bow roller, that's a must. Guide posts I can definitely see helping as well. I'm hoping to trade this trailer though, so hesitant to start throwing a bunch of upgrades yet. Hopefully I'll find a taker on the trade soon.

You can surf with stock set up you will just struggle to go rope less. Right board and ballast set up and I have my fingers crossed.
Dang! I guess we will see how it goes, but that would be a little disappointing.

Had a great time out on the water yesterday, boat is great, everyone was very impressed by it. It's just such an overall great package with speed, handling, comfort, and fun. I think my only surprise was how quickly I ran through a tank of gas. Do a lot of you carry extra on the water?

I never have and I dont think many do. Some lakes you are able to buy gas on the water if it came down to it. You are able to on the Butler Chain. That knife you linked should work fine. The public boat ramp for Lake Conway is at
5638 Randolph Ave, Orlando, FL 32809
. Parking is limited from what I remember and there is a least one low bridge you may have to lower your tower to pass under. I really enjoy the Butler Chain and Bird Island is a great place to hangout and party. New Smyrna and Dissapearing Island are our usual go to spots when we hit the coast and don't feel like making the drive to St Pete area. We usually use Swoop Site Boat Ramp or Halifax Marina in and cruise down to Ponce Inlet. Our favorite places are on the west coast Egmont Key, Bunces Pass, Passage Key etc but that's a drive and we usually plan to stay overnight as opposed to driving back same day.

Extra gas? No, I usually will burn 50-60% in a full day.

Also one other note is some lakes prohibit gas cans. This carries a hefty fine if caught.

congrats on the boat!

From the pics the trailer looks to be painted and not galvanized. Just wanted to point that out as the salt water won’t be too kind to it over time.

@JetSet407 had some great tips and places to go. I typically head out to the Ponce Inlet area, launching from Halifax or Dunlawton. Swoop Site ramp is nice because it’s close to the inlet, but IMO it’s too crowded and busy (2 ramps and something like 80 parking spots). If you launch from NSB, it’s no wake most of the way to the inlet.

never been to the Cape, so can’t compare.

Another nice trip is up the Saint Johns to Silver Glenn, but even launching from Ed Stone Park in Deland, it’s about an hour cruise.

what RPM are your cruising out that you are burning through a tank of gas?

@slickstick Welcome to the forum. My wife and I met at UCF, well it was the "Knight Out Pub" at University blvd. and Alafaya Trail then, 34 years ago. I am sure that little shopping center with the Circle K, Subway, Pizza Hut and the pub is gone now.

Probably 3500-4000 doing 12-15mph surfing or tubing, etc. That's my worst mpg rating.

check out google maps streetview. I am AMAZED at how much that area has changed in the last 20yrs, not just the campus but Alafaya & University as well.

Same for me but I think it’s the drag behind the boat pulling people that gets the bad gas mileage.

Yup that adds to it as well. At 4000rpm though, I go through almost twice as much fuel compared cruising around at 5500rpm. Not that it matters, water sports is part of the fun and it eats some extra fuel. I didn't buy the boat to be a fuel saver...if I wanted real economy I'd buy a sailboat! :D

Thanks, we saw the growth then. We were there when University was a 2 lane road. Watched it grow to 6 lanes.

Thank you! and cool I'll have to check those spots out! Are there a lot of spots along the St John's to grab gas?

Of course I've been running her wide open throttle, haha.

Yea, definitely hoping to swap the trailer for a galvanized. You may have missed it but I have a post linked to the classifieds looking for someone interested.

Thank you and Go Knights! Yea, "the pub" and that entire shopping plaza got bulldozed and replaced maybe five years ago or so. If you remember Knights Library from that plaza, it moved up the street to a new location. So did Lazy Moon, pizza is just as good but it's actually a nice location and not a hole in the wall anymore!
