Dead starter?

I think Speedling had to replace his relay a couple years ago. See if you can get a hold of him.

Status update?

Hey! Love that @ feature!
First, pull the starter out and check on a battery by running wires to it. It should spin up pretty quick. If not, then starter. They can be rebuilt, or you can buy a new one on Ebay for pretty cheap and they are decent.
As for the relay, don't do it without pulling the starter out and testing that first. It's not as hard as it looks. I used a mirror under the exhaust on the engine bay and had a few lights in there to make sure I could see everything, which I still couldn't. Thank Yamaha for making the top of the engine flat!
But back to the relay...
It's a pain in the rear, and you have to cut all the zip ties that go all over the engine in order to get it out. You have to unbolt the ECM from the exhaust side, so just take the whole stinking tray out. Not the small one, the big one where you have your clean out plugs. Be sure to just unscrew the door, then unscrew the kill switches, and then the drain. Lift the whole thing out and put to the side so you can work in there.
Then, you'll need someone helping you, or a lot of patience to put a wrench on the front and back and try and get it undone.
Take the ECM out and lay it on top of the engine. This is where you can take the ECM apart and see what's going on in there. Not to hard at this point really. You will need to replace it, but it all just bolts in and out.
I say it's not hard, but I do a decent amount of working under cars, so I guess my version of hard isn't the same as most.
I would recommend taking a whole Saturday to do it though.
In the picture, it's at the top right of the box, which would be the bottom right when mounted to the Wall.
I will see if I can find all the old pictures and stuff and do a write up for ya'll... Warning, I have like 20 pictures, lol

Thanks @Speedling and thanks for the pic of the ECU, I didn't figure that assembly to be so straight forward.

I placed a jumper (9/16 wrench) across the starter/battery cable connection on the ECU. The starter didn't spool up so I was thinking the relay was ok. Before contorting my body to check the connection at the starter itself I started back at the battery...

The stack-up on my battery post is near capacity. The good engine had the lug on bottom, this engine was the top ring lug, I re-stacked the lugs and cranked down hard on the wing nut....BOOM.

I've been dicking with the batteries to change around the power sources. Things didn't feel loose at the post but they must of been just loose 'nuff in hindsight. Glad to find it was biological error and not a Yamaha one.

My ole 99 maxima and 06 truck have been challenging me lately..Combined with my old stingray eating starters from hydro-lock all the time.....I went into this figuring it was just another kick to the groin and wallet vs something simple.......

Much thanks to the Audience here......and their patience ...

Glad to hear it's fixed, that's why we should always start at the beginning, I had the same problem a few months ago, changed how the connections were stacked on the battery and problem goes away,

Glad you got it fixed before getting into the starters.

This site is awesome. Just yesterday I felt a vibration, stopped and tried the reverse thrust tip, and good as new. Maybe would not have tried that or known how to correct it without this site. :)

Glad it is fixed!!!

When I put in a 2nd battery and switch, I moved all my cables to the switch so only two cables connect to each post now (1 main connection and 1 onboard charger connection)

Solo many major looking problems in the marine motor boating world are due to bad connections. seen it a hundred times. @justason glad it is fixed.

@justason glad you're back up and running again. The best fixes are the cheap ones and free is even better!!!

Thanks, now maybe this weekend I can try that new Ronix Koalfish surf board that will have been sitting in my garage 3 weeks now !!!
