Deceitful Dealer Tactics

Mostly I just wanted to say hi and that my no kidding real world, non internet, non fighter pilot name is Bryan Griffith! Small world huh? Maybe we are long lost relatives.... anyway welcome and good luck with the search.

That's pretty funny. It sure is a small world, further proven by this thread when the salesman pops up 2 days after I make a post complaining about his dealership. Craziness! Anyway, cool to hear that there is another Brian Griffith out there. I'm sure you get asked about being named (nearly) the same as the dog from family guy all the time as well right?

Brian,
I'm glad that you'd reconsider working with us. Thanks!

In regards to my 53k number, I was assuming the first buyer paid MSRP plus tax (8.05% in AZ), but no freight and prep. Sorry for any confusion.

Give me a call if you'd like discuss the 242 or any other boats that we have, my direct line is 602-892-8987.

Thanks

Yep everyone brings that up. Fortunately it is overshadowed by my wife's name, the famous actress, Melanie Griffith. No lie, can't make this stuff up. Maybe I should have taken her last name to save us both the occasional humor grief, but it does help people remember our names...

Where? Are you selling yours for 45k?
If mine only had stock options, YES I would. Year old with about 5k in depreciation sounds about right.

Well then you would be one of the very few 2016 AR240s on the market right now, and my guess you would be listed with the lowest price. That may sit fine for a private seller wanting to unload quickly, but leaving extra meat on the bone isn't going to pay for a dealers overhead.

Now keep in mind that you may negotiate a 50k listed boat down to 45k, but this thread is about a listing, not a bottom dollar won't budge price. The listing on the 212x in question is high (imo) but not unreasonable.

Not that boat trader has every listing, but your hypothetical beats all of their listings as suspected.

I bought my boat at $51k and keep in mind it's a year old now. I highly doubt anyone would pay that for my boat when they can pay few more thousand to get a 2017. Just my opinion but I understand what you are saying.

Exactly I agree for the AR240, but no one can pay a couple more grand to get a new 212x anymore so that option is off the table for anyone that zoned in for that specific model. But we are still talking about listings in which I don't really expect many used boats to actually sell for what they are listed for.

Yamaha 242 LS pic 2.jpg I started at the end of last year trying to sell my 2013 212x, 92 hours and in perfect condition, Thrust Vectors, Throttle sync, dual batteries, and extra Hydroturf at the bow and stern steps from JBP. Loved the boat but was negotiating with several dealers in the Pacific North West and online with high volume dealers in the U. S. I was looking to step up to a new leftover 2016 242ls. There where boats all over the country being advertised with some steep discounts. Checked out the shipping costs for a 242ls and got bids on several boats to be trailered to Mercer Island Wa. Most were in the $2,000 range for the transportation costs + insurance/ damage concerns on a boat unseen. I started advertising my 212x at $38,500.00. Based upon the 2017 212x priced at $57,999.00 , I thought this was a good starting price. Two weeks in winter over the holidays not one call on the boat. I lower the listing to $36,500.00 and tell a couple friends and family I'd sell it to them for $35,000.00. It's now Jan. 2017 boat show season, people will be shopping for boats,,, not one call. I've decided not to look any more at boats farther away than a distance I'm willing to drive to pick it up,,, around 200 miles . Talk with a dealer in Idaho several times, they have three 2016 242ls left over, 2 white, 1 gray. I get them down to $57,999.00 on a white with no prep fees, but their top offer is $26,000.00 for my boat. My minimum deal breaker was at least $31,000.00. No deal, and they would not even consider them doing the driving 200+ miles to swap boats. Sales tax would only be due on the difference and paying no long distance shipping made $31,000.00 my break point.

The dealer I bought the 212x from Desert Valley Powersports, Prosser, Wa. 200 miles away, had a new 242ls. After a month of phone and email negotiations we settled on $55,800.00 for the 242ls with a trade in value of $31,000.00 for my 212x. I had them do some upgrades, JL speakers, sub, and amps and Guest dual bank charger with plug port, to add to their bottom line and get some things done that I don't have time to do. A deal I could live with.

I still think my 2013 2122x has a retail value of $36,500.00 and that would place a real world value of maybe $40,500.00 for a perfect low hour 2014 212x. To top it off Desert Valley owners Chris and Dan Denchel drove the 200 miles to swap boats at the boat launch under I-90 on Mercer Island on a Sunday, the one day their store is closed. Super guys, and they have a perfect 2013 212x for sale that can be purchased at a fair price.

This is really good incite into the process, it really shows just how much of a hit you could take if you're not cautious. Congrats on your new 242, she a beauty! It's too bad that Desert Valley Powersports is over 1000 miles from me or I might give them a call.
