After a great day in the Gulf my brother and I, both in late 60s, had a few shaky moments while accessing the aft platform. I found that 1.25 inch schedule 40 PVC will fit perfectly in the straight up pole holders this providing some support to help maintain balance. I've included pics.IMG_20180425_152720218_HDR.jpg

That will be perfect for securing my dinghy instead of towing it, not all of the Marine State Parks we camp at have docking facilities, just buoy's to tie up on.
 
Confirmed the 1 1/4" fits perfectly in those holes on my boat as well. If you want to use PVC in the other rod holders, you will need 1".
 
I stick a flag on one when underway. Sometimes... but works well.
