I recently talked with a garage door guy and he told me you can purchase doors in 3" increments. For instance, my boat has a 11'-1" height. I could get a 11'-3" door and back it right in. I believe you have to add 12" to the door height on the interior wall to accommodate the springs and hardware.
they can make anything you want, sticking with standards helps. Dont short yourself over a few inches. a perfectly vertical dimension may bite you if you have a steep approach angle, or a hitch with a different drop dimension. or if you adda 3-4" nav light someday.
talking with a clopay person, the statement of 12-14" overhead clearance was required for infrastructure of the door.
