How often does it really, really happen?

I have never used the cleanout ports on the water. I have had to remove the pump twice to clear fishing tackle and have gone into the water to clear weeds off the intake grate. I always carry a mask on the boat just in case.

I‘ve had to remove fishing line from the pump shots a couple of times because I wasn’t paying enough attention when landing a fish and slack line got sucked up.

What you don't hear about is the number of times ropes and other objects are wrapped around the props and skegs and props are damaged because they strike unmovable objects. Every type of boat has it's advantages and diadvantages.
