Usually there could be as many as 8,000 + boats and 60,000 people as have happened in the past. Here is an aerial I just saw. We don't partake in the event. Also severe thunderstorms moving in this afternoon as well.

Back in the early nineties, I was 17/18 years old my cool uncle (Uncle Vern) took me out to gull island. It wasn't the official Jobbie Nooner day but the island was packed, that was the day I learn about beads. Uncle Vern was giving me beers, and beads to give out off the back of his Sundancer. Great memory of my Uncle, he passed away a few years ago.

We have a similar spot in Canada on Lake Erie just off Turkey Point called Pottahawk. It’s legendary for all the same reasons. Last year it made the news by local officials warning against the gatherings because of Covid. For the most part it seemed to work. The numbers were way down....just lots of television footage of police boats handing out tickets for drinking (which is illegal here in Ontario on a boat, unless anchored, and boat has permanent sleeping accommodations, head and galley) The island is 15 minutes from my slip so I will swing by this year but I expect it to be subdued unless our vaccination efforts kick in hard. I‘ll Post pics.

Same here but I was going out there in the mid and late 90s. One old guy with in every nice boat and four hot 20-something year old chicks. That was back when women weren’t wearing the small bikinis they are now and it was a rare sight. Crazy how it’s evolved over the years. I thought it was crazy back then not being able to see a spec of sand to beach on Gull Island so I can’t even imagine it now. We used to go to Muscamoot on the SeaDoos to run full throttle in the glass-like water and there were hardly any boats anchored since they were all at the island.

We have a similar gathering on Lake Butte des Morts (Sand Bar Bash) which is on the chain of lakes that my boat is dry stacked on. This is a photo from a couple of years ago - I can’t find one from last year:

The guy that they found that was offended is a stand up paddle boarder. These guys are like the twenty-speed bike guys in their cute little outfits who think they can peddle in the middle of a 30mph road going 15mph.

Beads as in necklaces? I used to wear a puka shell necklace back in the day. Great memory for you.

I'm just going out on a limb here and think "beads" as in Mardi Gras and "show me your tata's" type beads. But, he could be talking about a necklace too ?

This was last year. From other pics, we've figured out that I'm the red circled boat ?

Up just a hair and to the right is the rental houseboat that had someone get their wave runner impounded, the female driver carted off, and from what we heard, they had a few folks have to find a way home to avoid being ticketed for too many people on board if they fired up the motors!
