looking for a phone app for navigation

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I saw someone else say it was subscription based now and I have see some spam emails about subscriptions but I haven't looked into it myself. I paid the $15 on the iPhone back in 2014 and it still works. So maybe it's a subscription for map updates monthly or something.

I wasn't aware of the iOS 8 feature update either for the GPS in airplane mode. Thanks!

Mostly focused on open waters of Chesapeake Bay and larger for the past 5 years (big sailing catamaran), use Navimatics Charts and Tides and Garmin's Blue Charts. Found integrated "Active Captain" absolutely invaluable as a cruiser. Rated anchorages, marinas, hazards, fuel prices, local info,....and tides and weather (if want to pay).

Navioncs does charge an annual subscription at least for the iPhone software now. The app still works but I have to pay another $5 if I want updated maps. $5 is way better than the $100 a year I pay for updates for my plotter.

I always use Navionics for android. It is 4.99/yr and can use it on all my devices. Run it on 2 tablets at the same time on boat. One with the nav info the other with sonar. Works great.

I use Isailor, its free and the charts are cheap.

Navionics & Garmin Blue Water, on iPhone/pad-

Garmin integrates 'Active Captain' that I like
