Marina Fuel Prices, Price gouging....how do you get fuel to your boat?

I was just wondering the same thing @sstegh. I have found that my "gallons used" is very accurate, but the little bar showed over half after last weekend and I put in 35 gallons.

Anyone use this? Looks like it would be worth if for those that need to fill up at a dock often.

@Julian, do you know of the later year boats have the same problem with ethanol or has Yamaha fixed that?

What I recall (and my memory isn't perfect) was that the 2010 model year boats were the first year that the new "recalibrate on full" senders were installed.

I replace my sender last year and wish I had done it sooner. It isn't that they incorrectly calibrated them, but that the sender was never designed to measure ethanol fuel. The new ones handle it by recalibrating each fill up. Now if you are just putting in 5 gallon jugs....and not filling her up...it will not re-calibrate each time, but at least it will have the new sensor to handle ethanol and would be closer (and reset when full). Click Here for the thread-I wish I'd replaced mine sooner....having a gauge that reads right was so much more "comforting" than constantly guessing!

Done and done -- Ordered. After reading the thread -- It sounds like this is the only course of action. Thanks -- CP

I have seen them, but they are not cheap... $300 vs $15 for a 5 gallon gas can...

Check the regulations on your lake and see if it's even legal to fuel on the docks. Then also make sure your insurance covers any spillage. On Lake Tahoe, it's against the rules to fill at my dock (it isn't owned by a marina either). The past few summers, gas at Tahoe has averaged about $6/gallon. I see it as the price of owning a boat.

When on Lake Shasta two years ago, the price was the same and the marina owner said that's because they had to bring it up in smaller trucks and haul it across the lake bed and store it in a movable facility that didn't leak and leech into the lakebed. Again, that made sense for where I was fueling.

Although it's more expensive to buy marina fuel, there's also a convenience to it. You don't have to store cans, haul them around in the back of the SUV, and lift 40+ pounds of fuel out of the car and onto the ground and down to the dock, and then worry about a spill.

I just went through this process for my boat on a lift, originally I was going to purchase VP-racing jugs. Here is how I did it for about $100 cheaper.

Here is how I did 30 gal for $110.
I also purchased this 1 inch jiggle siphon for my wife so she doesn't have to lift fuel cans for $20, this thing is great but make sure you get the 1 inch for boats it will do 5 gallons very quickly.
@Russ C Would you happen to know if the gas can spout kit you use fits this can:

I don't recall where did I actually buy mine, I have like 5 of them, and these CARB bull $hit spouts drive me crazy. Thank you, no worries you are not sure, I just can seem to be able to figure it out.

I've probably spilled more gas in the last year because of this new spout bullcrap than I have in the past 30 years of using gas cans. I'm really disappointed at the companies who design these nozzles.

But.....Thanks to somebody on this board that turned me on to these cans:

These things rock!

I use 4, 5 gallon plastic cans. I hate the new "EPA" ones so I bought a flex nozzle that fits the cans and punched a hole in the back of the can to vent. The new spout that you have to almost lean on to get the can to drain is a bunch of crap. I tape over the vent hole with tape while I'm hauling it back to the boat. No spillage out of the vent if you don't fill the can totally full. My project is to get a tank I can put in the back of my pickup and then run a line down to the dock.

I love the VP cans from when I raced motorcycles they were awesome! Have you guys seen the Rotopax? I have a jet ski cooler rack with the mounting plates to add and stack containers. I do not own any yet but the scratch and dent prices are a little better and could be useful on the boat for an easy mount for the Bimini trip. Sorry if a little off topic but another storage/container idea. http://home.rotopax.com

I believe those are the same threads. But the kits come with two different size rings so one of the two will work.

One note of caution, this is the high-flow spout and may not fit in a car tank. For the boat it works great but may be to large for a car. I will check tonight, If you want a spout for boat and car you may need the smaller one.
