It's beautiful, but it's also packed. Forget about going on the weekends, and the pontoon nazi's that own every 1m house on the shores has regulated any watersports to the tune of 6 hours per day on weekends. This past year, they took away all the extended parking at the largest of the ramps - so now if you go there and aren't one of the lucky 15 people, no launching for you.
We won't be back in 2021, the rich lake nazis have kicked out the little guys successfully.
Make sure to HMU if you are thinking about the Croix!!
I recommend using Windmill Marina in Afton MN for launch. You can't go wrong there. Very little stress. Although they charge like $35 a night if you leave your vehicle overnight, on top of the $20 launch fee. There are two parts of the Croix: Hudson to Prescott is generally going to be the "beer can island" party scene, and north of Hudson past Stillwater is the quieter picturesque way to go. You can camp on the Croix north of Stillwater MN. It is actually controlled by the NPS, and they have floating porta potty barges that are very clean. It is great for boat camping. North of Stillwater is really a gem, very beautiful. That party scene on the lower isn't really that crazy, just a couple of spots: In Hudson, at the Kinni State Park, and MN side of Prescott.
We may be up there during 4th of July. It’s between there and Hayward. Not sure yet. Otherwise later in the season. My uncle has a slip at the Point St. Croix marina so we would probably dock there for the weekend if there’s room. Love the area. In 2012 a few buddies and I rented a house boat at Beanies for a long weekend. The water was so high and moving fast that we were going to try and make it to the Nauti Hawg but it was too far. Ended up going back up to Hudson and getting on the sandbar by next to the Dike. They didn’t want to let us in but being the biggest boat they eventually moved. It was around 1,700.00 in gas for 3 nights. Don't want that bill again.
Roughly 15 yrs ago or so me and some buddies took my uncles 29 foot cruiser and we’re headed up to PD Pappys in Stillwater and forgot to lower the radio antenna and snapped it in half. I think it was on that old train bridge. Needless to say once he got his new 35 ft crusier no more boating with the buddies for me. Lol.

Assuming this is all before your Yammy days? Funny how we change after.... WE OWN THE BOAT. Bahahahaha. My son is 16, I will be hard pressed to let him take his buddies out without me on board within the next 15 years!
Of course I’m in. Mid August sounds perfect. I’m in Waukesha, but tend to leave my local lakes behind. Too crowded and kinda boring. My home away from home is along the Mississippi, Pool 9. A few years ago @SCP1 introduced us to Lake Wisconsin, and it is one of my favorite places to boat. I like rivers and sand bars, and going up river from Lake Wisconsin is great for that. When is the best time to visit Partridge and Poygan? We went July last year and the water was nasty... green stains on my hull when we got home. Those shallow lakes get a lot of bloom it seems.
Second pic is just down from the Genoa dam, and the third pic with @SCP1 is about a mile down from there on Gillette Island. If you’re a pool 8 boater you definitely know where my signature pic was taken.
@RiverRat. I’m somewhat familiar with pool 8, I’m not originally from this area and all of my river time has been on other peoples boats. We are picking up the new boat this Friday and plan on spending most of our time between Genoa and Prairie du Chien.

The Mississippi River is broken up into pools, between dams, usually about 30 miles apart. La Crosse is in Pool 8, I spend most of my time on 9, just south of Genoa, and Prarie Du Chein is pool 10. My St. Louis friends like @jcyamaharider@mattschepker and the gang are way down on pool 26.
