Multiple issues at last outing

That's my best guess. I didn't hit the bottom anywhere.
Maybe it hit the trailer when loading it back? I don't know. We would be guessing.
I agree with @Stevenpigsooie. Also said the other reasons. A shorter plug is less likely to hit a rock, beach, dock, or the trailer.
 
For clarity, I like @CrankyGypsy fix solution better than mine. I had not considered damage to the underlying fiber. His suggestion is much better...
 
I'm sure there is one that is 'supposed' to be used, but I don't know what it is. When I repaired my fiber, I just used regular epoxy from Home Depot/Lowe's. Seems to have worked just fine.
 
I certainly wouldn't use that plug again, as you've learned it just a risk to catch on a rope, log, or bottom. I have the same reservations about the boatplug lights that go in there and stick out - too risky for me.
 
Repaired and back on water. No issues.
