So I'm beginning to contemplate where I will mount my Garmin 541 on the new boat (242x) and seek some varied angled shots of the dash area, and your thoughts as to where the best place to mount one would be. The only mounting point I recall seeing on this model is putting the mount in the cup holder on the dash.

I will be using a RAM fixed mount like this:

Julian, could I get the same/similar Garmin functionality out of an iPhone App? Greg

No...a Garmin 541 has a depth sounder and fish finder capability, and water temp sensor. The iPhone will give you GPS. In addition to GPS you get lots of marine use features - like anchor slip warnings (in case the boat moves on its anchor) etc.....most that I won't use....but some I do.

I definitely like the accurate depth readings, and occasionally we fish. The new boat has water temp I think....

Now I'm wondering if the spot where @JetBoatPilot is planning to mount the Perfect Pass guage would fit a GPS....hummm....think I'll need to lay my hands on the boat to determine where I'll like it best....the waiting is killing me....

Boatless and suffering from withdrawal....

In my crazy dream world where I have endless time and money...... I would move those tachs to the side bolster area and create a custom panel insert to flush mount a GPS screen.

Julian, I do believe you are correct. The new units have a water temp sensor. 99% sure I found it last week while on the lake.

Don't have much time right now, but just ran out and snapped a few pics as I'm heading out later this afternoon-

Bottom-line for me, I am looking at the area to the right of the helm for navigation support. Unused, doesn't obstruct visibility and not going to get hit by folks going to/from the bow.

Suction cup I have now was to experiment some before creating something solid (to starboard) before Bimini-

I've mounted my Lowrance 5 on the small sponge pad to the right of the steering wheel, the wheel does obstruct viewing slightly but not when I'm standing.

I can't believe Yamaha can't/won't intergrate a GPS into the connext screen, it's so logical .

Now have a little more time-

I'm thinking the opportunity is for a horizontal mount, coming out of the area in picture #3150, to hold a device between the shifter and the conext joystick. It is below the line of sight, yet easy to see (and out of the way), from the helm.

Could mount either the forward or starboard side, wall-

@Glen thanks for the pics....that is the exact area (in 3150) that I was wondering about. It is where @JetBoatPilot has made a mount for a Perfectpass gauge to fit....so I'll have to see if there is room for a Garmin 541 in that spot, then determine how to hold it there. It was also the same spot I was eyeing for my Fume detector....but that is much smaller and probably has much easier places I could put it!
