Put a down payment on a boat here in Clearwater, FL

Couple questions for current owners:

1. I will be storing the boat outside. The dealer is telling me that if I use the shipping cover as a cover for storing that I will get molds and mildew here in FL. Any truth to this or just trying to sell me a cover?

2. Anyone successfully extend the Bimini in the rear and still stay out of the way of tow ropes from tower?

3. The extended Warranty is for 5yrs and costs 2K. Is it worth it?

4. Dealer is offering Cost + 15% on any items that I want to buy at time of sale. I imagine most things are marked up at a Yamaha shop... so is there really any savings to be had here? What do you wish you would have bought when you had the opportunity like this?

5. They want $300 for fist service. Is this steep? Is it really more than an oil change?

6. Lastly I could only beat them up for $500 off sticker and a free second battery upgrade along with coast guard kit and bumpers. Is this a decent deal?

1. I would buy a mooring cover. They are nice and vented which will help avoid mold.

3. We love these boats because of their low maintenance and reliability. I would not pay for an extended warranty.

4. Cost plus 15% seems way less generous than cost. They are making their money on the boat. A good discount on the cover could be some of the best savings you could get.

5. I believe it is about $20 worth of oil and $15 worth of filter. All dealers do this.

6. Yamahas normally sell for MSRP so getting $500 off and another $400 of stuff thrown in sounds great.

My only concern after not buying the 5 yr coverage is that I hope I'm not one of the very very few who has a bad timing chain waiting to grenade. I still wonder if I should have bought it and then had the coverage and the option to later sell the boat with a years worth of coverage left. (Selling point over a boat w no warranty)

If you use it for things like my broken seat pan, broken speedometer paddle wheel, and of course a rare catastrophic timing chain failure it's the best money spent, if your boats bulletproof with no issues you'll look back and think that was the biggest waste of $2k ever!

I thought every dealer gave the CG starter kit away as a freebie incentive.

Oil changes are easy and cheap, don't overpay for the dealer.

Someone here sells Yamaha mooring covers cheap, search the boards or maybe a member who bought can post up. @dansshin didn't you get one? Check prices before you buy from them, maybe they'll even price match. Mooring cover is better than shipping cover, get the shipping cover anyway!

Last but not least welcome!

Thanks and all good tips. Is there more to the first service than an oil change? I have many motorcycles, and do my own maint on them.... so that does not scare me. Just curious what else is involved on the first service.

The 2K is refundable (100%) if unused over the entire 5 years. So maybe a good plan.

Any clue if the price is decent at MSRP - $500 + Dual Battery install?

If it's fully refundable I'd say do it IMO. It's a CYA but like others have said...motors are bulletproof

-Need to get 2yrs of warrenty, from dealer. Wait on buying more (money should be in your bank, not theirs)
-I've always worked with multiple dealers and always (2 new Yamaha boats) paid 1000's less than MSRP. (Never bought during peak season: now)
-Dealer discounts are rarely worth it as you can find the exact product, for less, on Amazon or other mass dealer-
-do your own service. Save money, easy & know done right.
-what do you have to loose by calling 4 other dealers (willing to drive to, to get your boat) and seeing what they will do for you to 'earn your hard earned cash'?

Yamaha sports plaza for the cover. Have bought them cheaper than from the dealer even with a discount.

I got a yamaha cover, thrust vectors, anchor and coast guard kit free when I purchased my boat. Also $2k off msrp (bought 2014 sx192 in April 2014). As far as using the shipping cover, I have been using it for the last 2yrs and its been great! (New one still in the garage) It keeps the boat very dry. And they are vented. At least mine is.

As far as the extended warranty, that's more of a personal preference. I look at it like insurance. Hope you never need it, but you'll be glad you got it if you do. Enjoy your new boat!

I was able to get my dealer to throw in the mooring cover at half off to close the deal, but they would not budge on sticker price. I have read a lot on here about mildew build up on the seat, especially down by you with the humidity so I would highly advise against using the storage cover. I only use mine for winter storage, but there is something like a .05% humidity up here in MN in the winter so I'm safe. I keep my boat on a lift all summer and the humidity is on average about 80%. I have not had any mildew problems with my mooring cover on. I do try to be diligent about letting the boat dry and removing the carpet if wet before covering it.

Again, just like everything else, my post is just an opinion. I am not quoting anything written, I am referencing my real world experiences. SC has some of the highest humidity in the region and I have no, nada, zero issues with mildew. I always allow the boat to dry prior to covering and have used the shipping cover since I've owned the boat. My thoughts are to not to use the $$$ Yamaha cover until I need to, as they have a life expectancy and I wanted to get the most out of the covers. Even covering from October to April this past year I had no issues. Personally the shipping cover does a much better job than the mooring covers ive used in the past. Boat was spotless when uncovered.
But either way, enjoy your new purchase.....

I think not covering a wet boat is the biggest key to keeping the mildew out. I did just recently notice that the shipping cover does have more vents than the mooring cover.

Living in the south, I use a fan under the cover regardless. I can't stand a mildew smell in my boats. Over the winter, I put on my mooring cover and then the shipping cover over that (with the fan running underneath) to act as a sacrificial cover as I had to leave it outside this year. Worked great, but I don't plan to leaver it outside again.

Great stuff here to arm myself with. Sounds like 500+dual battery is not so horrible. I pressed them again and they also will throw in the cushion for the bow. The kids will like that.

I will call other dealers to see if there is anything better out there.

For the cover, I will look elsewhere since the dealer cost +15% is not great.

Any other hints? I got til Friday to decide.

Coast guard starter kit free!

The $500 off plus the dual battery kit is not a bad deal as long as they are not charging you shipping and dealer prep fees. If they are throwing a another $1500 to $2000 in fees back on top of that I would shop around a little. As mentioned above call or email several other dealer tell them you are about to buy and you need their best out the door price on the boat of your specification and your going with who ever is the lowest. After you have the lowest price go back to your local dealer and ask them to match it if they do not walk away and get the best deal you can. Out the door price is key when asking the other dealers for pricing as when you go back to your dealer they will try and tell that the price your being quoted doesn't include fees and this way you can tell them yes it does.

1, I store my boat out in the Floridian sun with a deluxe mooring cover with no problems. Yes, I believe the dealer is right, you may get mold.

2, Not aware of anybody doing this so you may be the first but the Bimini on my 190 was more than adequate.

3, A question only you can really answer, if you take it out and a major engine rebuild is needed it will be the best 2k you've spent, if not used the biggest waste of money with your boat purchase. I personally took the middle of the road three year, a good compromise.

4, I'd shop around, West Marine have deals plus you have more choice if buying at numerous outlets.

5, Yes, that's extortion. It really gets me how dealers can justify their service charges with these jet boats, parts are minimal, oil, filters and a little bit of grease, plugs are not changed at 10 hours or at least not needed. If your not competent with servicing yourself a good recommendation of a marine mechanic should be ok.

6, As many with testify, getting good discount on these boat seems to be a dark art. I had a fantastic deal but only because the dealer made a massive balls up with my order. You mentioned Clearwater, is there not another dealer close, Barneys if I recall? I'm sure I'll be corrected.

Buying a boat is a great experience and your in an area where you have many outlets, shop around and be prepared to travel.

I have put out quote requests to all the dealers within 150 miles, so we will see who bites.
