Oil Filter replacement ( Alternative means )

I popped into my Yamaha franchise yesterday to pick up a couple of Oil Filters as they are quite far from me and if I'm around there i say hello to one of there service guys who i have struck up a friendship with, When i change the oil in my Boat he bring's his oil extractor and removes the oil for me and also if someone asks him about moving a Boat he calls me as they don't supply that service, As per usual there were no oil filters in stock but as i was in no rush i was prepared to wait, I mentioned this to the service engineer and moaned about there lack of stock for the jet boats, At that he went over to his work bench and returned with a torn off top to a filter box, Go and get 2 of these he said we use them when were out of stock there the same filter, Off i went to check it out not as i doubted his word and low and behold after buying 1 and removing one of mine to compare he was right, Made by the same company Denso and a lot cheaper, Here are the details they can be purchased at any Auto parts outlet at probably half the price.

They are for the Mazda gasoline models 1.5 1.6 and 2.0 engines and cover our full range of Engines fitted to the Jet Boats i believe going by the years and models of the cars, Sorry about the Photos it was very sunny and the car details were behind a plastic cover, I hope this is of use to members it certainly was to me.

Yes it's handy for me also as it's a nightmare getting anything for Jet Boats here, I just regard it as a challenge and overcome the problem, There's always an alternative way to do thing's, Thanks for the reply, Good Luck.

Thanks for that it's very kind of you but the shipping costs out way the job, I usually find a way around thing's I'm afraid it's a case of having to over here, It does me good to overcome problems for me and other Yamaha Jet boaters here also as they seem to rely on me to sort there jobs out, A few weeks ago a Guy with an AR 230 actually flew me to Koh Samui to sort his solenoid problems out because he didn't trust local workmanship and the nearest franchise was near to me he also found other jobs for me to do on the Boat while i was there so i tend to find my way around these Boats and collect good tips and short cuts on the way, Good Luck.

Have you tried checking for a cross reference for the Air Filters as that could be useful.

Great find! Amazon has them for $8 - Genuine Mazda B6Y1-14-302A Oil Filter and the K&N version for $11 K&N HP-1008 Performance Wrench-Off Oil Filter.

Have you cut both of these open? The Yamaha filter is a fleece mesh filter that is far superior to paper like many are made of. I would expect Honda and Mazda to use better quality just like Yamaha. But I want to know they are identical, not just similar.

No i haven't cut them open as i took the engineers advice to get 2 of them for me and as they use them themselves when they are out of stock and as the spec on them goes up to a 2 litre car i have no reason to doubt his word or that they are ok to use, I have since been into an Auto supplier to check availability and they offered me 2 versions of this filter and when i asked the difference they answered by telling me the cheaper one is just paper so i presume that the genuine Mazda one is of a higher quality than the other versions.

Many of us have learned that taking a techs word for it is not always the best advice. I'm not saying he is giving bad advice here, but a techs motivation is much different than yours or mine. That said, many would argue on a boat that you change the oil more frequently than necessary, and where boats are used in non dusty conditions, that a premium filter isn't needed. I am not arguing either. I am just asking, are they the same? Because looking at them from the outside may say they are, but are they? I certainly hope you have stumbled across a replacement that is more available and less expensive, not just a cheaper filter. K&N is believed to be a better filter too by many here...but it is a paper filter media compared to the fleece in a Yamaha or Mercedes Benz filter. Yamaha filters are more expensive it is true, but they may actually be worthy of that price.

Ok point taken, I'm sorry but I'm unaware of the technical specification of the filter so I'm unable to answer your question, If the paper filters are not of a high standard I'm very surprised that K&N use them as so many Motorcycle Race teams use there Filters and they are put through far greater stress levels than what we would ever reach in our Boats but i have no way of answering your question at this moment in time but i will endevour to make some inquiries and see what i can find out, Thanks for the reply, Good Luck.

I am going to buy one of the mazda filters and cut it open. Again, not trying to add to debate, just trying to make sure what we think is accurate. Lots of guys think that about K&N. And racing teams don't care about longevity or moisture control, they change the oil after every race! And like I said, we too change frequently so it wouldn't be too much of a factor. My main concerns are the oil that is left in it over the winter. Those oils should never be dirty, but certainly can't hurt if they only have 20-30 hours on it. And leaving fresh oil over the winter just allows moisture to collect in it IMO, and that is my main reason for spring oil changes, to remove more of the moisture. The oil filter is probably overkill, but that is ok with me, because stopping any impurity or metal is paramount to me. I suppose the fleece also holds moisture, that is a good debate too, good or bad? Better in the filter than in the engine! And @Geoff Cooper , we are all in this together, you make some good finds and please, keep it up! If anyone questions anyone, it is in good faith, not otherwise. I prefer the K&N filter simply because of the nut on the bottom. Makes it so much easier to remove with a standard wrench or socket! Don't know why ALL oil filters aren't made that way. Oh wait, that would make too much sense

I figured out the oil filter wrench dilemma a few years back. I like my wide strap wrench so much better than the 14 faced 6514 that I have. But you have to place a piece of sand paper between it and the filter, mades it non slip and works like a champ. And it is easier still because with the big filter socket, the wrench, you can't always turn it easy in the confines of the engine compartment, the strap is more compact and easily positioned. But I think the nut it the better way to facet the head for sure!

But the wrench that is needed for the stock yamaha filters is a 14 faceted 65mm open socket faced wrench used with a socket wrench. Here it is...

And the metal ones work, the abs ones do not. You can get these socket heads at a yamaha motorcycle or atv. It isn't common for the boat dealers to sell tools or other supplies, but the motorcycle dealers generally do.

We have no wintering time over here and you can use the Boats all year around, We do get the rainy season which we are just coming out of at the moment but that doesn't affect the boating that much as it mainly rains at night although this last few weeks we have had some rain in the daytime hence i have been doing odd jobs on the boat, As these boats are a dry sump system i believe oil is stored in the catch tank and not in the engine, I removed my filter to check it against the new one and only about 2 tablespoons of oil came out as i didn't start the engine obviously, Like you say it's probably an overkill as i wouldn't think that Mazda would use anything that is of poor quality in there engines and these oil filters are genuine parts, I suppose regarding the K&N filters it's just a matter of choice as they will both do the same job and how do we prove which one catches more moisture than the other as paper absorbs moisture very easily it's a catch 22 situation i think and boils down to a matter of personal choice, Yamaha don't make these filters and only have there name put on them there just badge manufactured consequently if they were sold with the Mazda name on or any other name in fact and fitted to your Boat you would be able to price check and i really don't think Yamaha would want that to happen as it would do there after sales service an injustice, It will be interesting to read your results and also what the advantage is over one filter or the other regarding the moisture absorption.
