Oil in air filter box

[Mid life crisis]

Have a 2014 Yamaha 242LS and it was finally running great yesterday. Then on the way back to the ramp I got an overheat warning on the port tachometer. We limped back and when I restarted it to put it on the trailer there was no more warning.
Nothing in either intake. Oil was changed a couple months ago but just today as I’m trying to figure it all out I notice oil in the port air box. Starboard air box is dry.
Could this cause issues? Maybe a bad temp sensor? Or worse. Any thought? Thanks in advance!

When you say it was "finally running great," explain was was happening prior to yesterday. On the MR-1 engines, overfilling with oil pumps oil, via the oil separator, into the airbox. Check your manual on the proper oil level. Sucking up silt/whatever can plug cooling system, hopefully only temporary, and cause engine to overheat.

Had issues with it being under powered and just running rough. Siphoned all the gas out that had been sitting in it for about 8 months and filled up with new. Normal power and running strong and smooth until coming to dock yesterday.

Well now you need to replace the air filter element and find out why the oil was overfilled perhaps you had a stuck or bad fuel injector. smell the oil and see if it smells like gas. I would not install the air filter element until you ;locate the reason because they are expensive and once oil gets on them you have to replace them

Thanks for the response. When I get back to it next weekend I’ll pull the filter out and see if I can tell where the oil is coming from in there. I’ll try to wipe all clean and hook it up to the hose and see if any oil is spitting in the air box. I’m hoping it’s just a sensor and not something worse. Im going to order a new filter and sensor and try to troubleshoot with both of those.
