ONAGOFly - Nano Smart Drone

A friend alerted me to this Indiegogo campaign this morning. I am disappointed by the 3.5 to 7 MPH max wind speed but that is reasonable for its size. If it lives up to the hype it could be a fun way to video boating outings without taking up much space on the boat.

I preordered the ProKit version but am curious what our experienced quad copter operators think?

It doesn't mention top speed anywhere. Wakeboarding is usually around 20 mph, I wonder if it could keep up very well...

Looks neat and is inexpensive but its in that category of inexpensive drone. My DJI Phantom 3 standard was under $500 during the holidays and would still buy that over this again. A few of the big draw backs with this unit are that its strictly wifi driven to the unit so your range is limited but at 90 feet still isn't terrible but no where near the DJI I have had mine over 3000ft out away from me and still had control. The fact that if it goes out of range it just stops and hovers with no sort of retrieval you have to find away to get your self in range which could pose problems especially if it being drifted by wind. No gimbal is a big one for me after experiencing having one with the DJI I couldn't imagine buying one of these with out one it will make it difficult to get moving shots in the exact frame you want. Once again these are all comparisons to a unit that is twice as much as this so the DJI should out preform it in every category but at this price point I would really consider kicking in the extra $250 and just get a DJI. I do agree the size is nice.

I think it is a good value and has obstacle avoidance which dji phantoms do not. I also like that it does not require the users to register with the faa since it weighs less than 1/2 a pound.

I may order one eventually (not during the Kickstarter campaign though) but it is still too limited feature and functionality wise to replace my phantom or cause me to cancel my orders for the pending follow me drones (air dog and lily). I see using this on the ski slopes not over the water. The release dates for these follow me drones has been pushed back several times already so I have doubts that this new follow me drone will be shipped as early as this feb. or mar.

2.3m pounds/around $3m dollars, 12k initial (kickstart) investors and some had to file claims in small claims court to "try" to get their money back! This makes me wonder if I'm going to get screwed on any or all of the $1,800 I have paid for drones "in development". I'm not worried much about the airdog ($1,250) as they are actually shipping but the lily ($550) is still mostly vapor ware aside from a few prototypes being paraded around for advertising / investment purposes.

Hopefully kick starter has put some procedures in place to better protect investors money in future campaigns. Even if this means just withholding the funds until the principals can demonstrate an immediate need for the money.

It's all about wind direction here my good sir. when it SE wind it's usually calm any other direction it gets chopped out. I was thinking the same thing when I got down there.

@mr moose I honestly have not done a lot of homework on other drones in the market place. I really wouldn't know the answer to that question. I have a few smaller ones such and some smaller RC copters and it's better then any of them hands down. Best Buy had them on sale right now for $499 and if you use your best buy card you would get another 5% off that. I do think sub $500 is a steal on the DJI.

The Phantom is the king of amature drones. Many people destroy them within days of buying. There are lots of $60 to $200 quad copter options that are cheap options for learning to fly a quad copter.

I bought Rana an inexpensive quad copter last year but it has only seen a few practice flights. I am hoping that the new class of self piloting drones will work with less of a learning curve and that we will get more use out of them.

The only reason I would say the DJI takes a little more skill then the smaller ones is it flight capabilities. It's a lot easier to not lose or crash something that only has a 60-90 foot range. The DJI is like anything else know your limits not the equipments limits and you should be fine. @Bruce and @mr moose I will have it in Bimini and will gladly let either of you fly it. That's how confident I am in its own safety capabilities unless you try to go running through a tree line or try to go dive bombing into the ocean it's highly unlikely you will crash it. Even if you lose sight of it there is an auto home feature you can press and it will return it to your home location you set at take off at a predetermined hieght you set so it can safely make it home.

Funny you mention - crashing - I lost one of my 3 drones in Destin Bay - I still have one I haven't lost - then I did buy the onago which is my most expensive by far. So I am learning slow and the lesson in losing a drone was only a $60 dollar loss. But we all had a good laugh and I must likely shouldn't have been drunk while throwing my drone off the top floor of the condo - lol.
