Have you had a chance to test the engine with the hole plugged yet to see if the engine still alarms?

I did not have a chance to try that @Julian. I was sort of in a rush to get the boat cleaned up and put away as we were flying back home the next day.
The only other small oddity I noticed was that several days before the overheat the port engine did not pee in the water at idle. As soon as you idled up to no wake speed (about 2300 RPM), water would exit the port normally. I was thinking that perhaps the strainer did not dislodge all at once...Maybe two of the bolts failed initially, allowing the strainer to become partially unseated and not allowing proper pressurization of the intake water at lower speeds.
After reading those two links you provided, I'm becoming a little concerned about a bad thermostat....then I checked the price of a replacement....$77 dollars!!! Yikes.
