Was driving in the car with some new cheap polarized sunglasses, when I noticed a perfectly spaced grid pattern on the rear window. Take of the glasses it's gone. Give the glasses to my son, he sees it takes them of it's gone. It does seem to depend on the brightness and possibly the angle of the sun.
Any ideas what it's from?

Yup, those are polarized sunglasses. Try wearing them while looking at a computer screen, phone, LCD screen, etc...in some cases the device will appear to be powered off. Polarized sunglasses are great while on the water though.

Looking through window tint with cheap polarized glasses is strange. Maybe that's what it is?

I figure it has to have something to do with the shatter proof film the pot on car windows. There it's a little transparent oil change sticker up in the corner that I'd a totally different color than the rest of the sky thru the windshield. And I know that some polymers will polarized light.

Is it not the rear window defog grid?

Nope those are just horizontal. This is more like cloudy boxes, but perfectly aligned.

With my prescription RayBan sunglasses I can look at my smart phone in portrait/vertical mode and see it fine. If I rotate the phone to view it in landscape/sideways mode, its all dark as if powered off.

Look up at the sky then tilt your head left then right.
It gets light and dark

What you see in the window glass is stress I would think. We use a polariscope to view stress in glass at work.

The problem is you're drinking too much cheep beer. Actually you are seeing the glue spots between the layes of glass that sandwich the flexible plastic layer. I'd still stay away from that cheep beer.

Get yourself a quality pair of polarized shades like Oakley or Costa and your wouldn't see near as much of the funny patterns in glass. Buyer beware! Once you've worn a good pair of expensive shades it's hard to go back to the cheapos. I had Oakleys first for several years with a couple of different ones. I then moved up to a pair of Costas a couple of years ago and they are dramatically better. I had problems with the film on the Oakley lenses starting to peal and deteriorate. I talked to Oakley customer service and they said it was from sweat, oils from the skin and sunscreen. That's when I decided to switch to Costas. I even got my wife to buy a pair and she's never been one to buy expensive sunglasses. She loves hers too.

I would like to buy a pair of nice shades, but I'm on my fourth pair this season:(
Sunk one:mad:
Scratched the shit out of one:mad:
Ran one over.

that's my problem, I destroy shades so I have been sticking with the cheap ones. I might try the Costas, I've seen them at stores (bass pro shop) and they look really nice.

I find if you sink the coin in a nice pair of shades, you'll start to consciously be more aware of taking care of them. My Ray Bans have lasted YEARS....my cheap sunglasses were weeks for similar reasons.

Ever look through 2 polarized glasses rotated 90 degrees to each other ? BLACKOUT
