Hi All

I am having issues with m starboard engine. I have replaced the starter becaus it would not crank. Now the starter tries to crank but does not turn the engine. Before changing the starter I would just hear a click from the solenoid but nothing from the starter. Now the start clicks but engine still does not turn to start up. Any help and advice is mostly appreciated. The plugs in the back are all working.

I have a Yamaha LS 2000.

Thank you

Swollen pump liner jamming up the impeller and locking up the engine

How can I fix it? The clean out ports are impossible to open. Previous owner never opened the clean out ports. So they are stuck. Don’t know if they might have been glued down by the first owner. I am the third owner.

Pull the pump and see if the engine starts with the pump removed.

I am assuming the pump is attached to the engine and located in the engine compartment. The impeller is down below and I correct? Would I need to disconnect the pump and the impeller or just the pump? Would this break any seals or gaskets I would need to purchase at my Yamaha dealer? Once it does start how do I repair the pump so that linear is not swollen? Do I need a new pump?

Check the faq tab at the top of the page

The pump pulls out the back of the boat , it is probably going to take some mechanical abilities to remove it and it probably is stuck as most are.
I would do some you tube research on removing the pump but it is going to probably be the culprit, then you will need to remove the liner section of the pump and replace it. What probably happened is the liner swelled and locked up the impeller the starter burned out trying to turn a locked up engine and the next guess would be that the engine is blown, there are ways to tell exactly what the problem is however either way you need the pump removed so start there. You can usually look in the pump through the nozzle from behind the boat or through the intake grate from under the boat there should be a space say 10 to 20 /1000ths between the edges of the impeller and the liner if not you will see the impeller making contact with the liner to confirm that the liner is swollen from dissimilar metal corrosion. common issue with these and the older the pump the more likely it is the issue.

Definitely get under the boat and look at the impeller. If you can see daylight between the liner and edges of the impeller I wouldn’t pull it yet... compare the port and starboard sides if you aren’t sure what you are looking at.

You could have engine problems. But it’s not impossible that the replacement starter is DOA.

Have you removed the spark plugs and tried to turn the engine via the vibration dampener coupler at the rear of the engine ? You can do that and see but I honestly believe the issue is 1st the pump or 2nd the engine one or the other is locked up. On a 2 stroke the spark plugs are the report card they should be chocolate brown if one is silver it is the kiss of death. If one of the ends is closed it means the rod or wristpin bearing is bad and the piston is striking the end of a plug.
I can also tell you how you can inspect the connecting rod bearings pretty easily to be sure those are ok . First What I would suggest is to stay focused on locating the cause of your issues. so we can get you out on the water.

Also check the battery terminal and wires/connections.

The starting system is isolated between engines. And each side has its own ground and positive cables...make sure you have all the cables connected.

Hi All,,

Thank you for the all the advice. I removed the impeller liner and purchased a new one. Installed it and the engine would turn no problem. Now that the impeller liner is back in it will not turn. I have taken the impeller out and tried to start the engine but no turn. You can hear the starts clicking and trying to start it but it does not turn. Any advice. the previous only replaced the start plugs before i bought it so I will not know if they are brown and silver per a previous post. Any assistance great appreciated
