I have a 2012 Yamaha 242 limited S. I have tachometer that has gone bad in my boat. It sends a constant signal to the guardian switch with no issues or codes. My boat is at a Yamaha shop and they can not get Yamaha Corp to return a call with an alternative to the Tachometer replacement part or part number. Anyone that may have a answer to this problem would be appropriate. Want to get back on the water ASAP. Part # F2U-U8245-60-00

Even if it's available I'm not sure you want it at $882. Holy Cow that's expensive.

(Link shows the one you want is not available, but the one on the other side is $882)
Perhaps used or even a good electronics repair place in town willing to peek and repair might be a good alternative?

Best of Luck!

I was told by the shop that the tachometer I need is the main tachometer (left/port). This is the brain on the two tachometers. The right side is just a tachometer

Were you able to get this resolved? I have the same Issue and can't find the Tachometer for my 2012 242 Yamaha.
Please share how you had it resolved.

Had this issue with my 2010 242, got moisture inside both gauges and the left tach stopped working. Been driving with just the one tach and not sure what options. Willing to really spend bucks for ( new digital gauges) with numbers you can actually read since such a great boat. But dont see much out there.

One approach is to upgrade both tachs to newer versions. I tried to buy a 2013 replacement to go with my 2010, but no luck. Others have bought both new same year tachs and it works. Probably some encoding occurs to make it so.... Good luck. If I could go all digital display I would as well.

Has anyone found a solution?

Just got boat from dealer , No help at all, says that part is discontinued and they will only work on it with that part. says to go look on ebay. like I really want to spend $2k on crappy tach that will just break in 6 years from now.

To the group ..I just submitted a query to Circuitboardmedics in greenville.NC to see if they might take a shot at repairing older Yamaha Tachs.
If they can I think I have an old one that I can send them to see if it can be fixed. Maybe some of you with the broken tachs may want to try as well.
It.might be a new line of business for them. They do automotive and other types of parts as well.

They fixed my GMC Yukon XL old instrument cluster. About $200...but now it has a lifetime warranty. This week they also repaired my circuit board on an older and unavailable KitchenAid circuit board...$150 versus a new fridge or eBay part. Sometimes the board soldering gets brittle with age on these things...probably like our tachs.

Hopefully this may be a viable path for our Yamaha Tachs that are unavailable or insanely expensive. I'll report back what they say...or feel free to contact them yourselves and maybe send them your broken tach.

Not sure if this is the same way to go...http://www.xs650.com/threads/speedometer-disassemble-instructions.33423/

Thanks , i will yank the tachs out and may give repair a try . I saw a place in Florida as well on ebay "Quickflip " marine electronics but not sure who to trust. I would spend $2k plus for a good digital replacement.

This may be a path....

See the list of parts he lists.
He seems happy with it

I am also going to look at the Actisense system...which is a similar thing to maybe get everything to NMEA. Actisense may be cheaper and I believe they may throw some engineering in to help design it given many people I believe pre.connext would like it.

I am dropping in 2014 tachs in tomorrow on my 2010 to see if that works....after I rebuild the oil cooler. :)

Good thing I like to tinker.

The pair of new 2014 port and starboard tachs installed on the 2010 ar240 today booted right up. Was happy to see the fuel level and which I had been missing.

We've experienced similar issues on finding parts for ours that are now "discontinued". We went ahead and ordered the exact same part (although a slightly different part number) from the 2013 model (2010-2014 all share the same hull design). The part your looking for is available for the 2013 (#4, Tachometer, F3H-U8245-20-00, listed at $1,368.02). It maybe something worth considering/looking into/discuss with your dealer?
So far everything we've received has been a direct bolt-on. Now, for arguments sake, we haven't had to replace any electronics yet. I've called Yamaha directly on issues where they have been quite helpful (but a lot of it depends on who answers the phone that day for them).

Do you have before and after pictures? For many of us, off the top of our heads we wouldn’t know what the difference is between the two tachs.

Glad it worked for you! Any missing (or enhanced) functionality?

I am dealing with the Ar240....versus the 242s that you guys have. The pic shows the old tachs (circa 2010)...and the 2014s that were in the boxes look the same. The 242s gauges online seem to have a flat black background...and mine have a honeycomb black graphite look.

I bought the starboard on 8/15/21 from boats.net for $376. And the Port way back in July of 2019 from Babbitts for $345. Not sure about losing functionality if you try these in a 242. When I matched a 2010 gauge running with a 2014 gauge they didn't work properly. Only the RPM read correctly...none of the digital displays. When the tachs both were the same year the electronic displays read correctly.

Boats.net has the 2014 Ar240 tachs:

Port F3H-U8245-00-00 for $373

Starboard F3H-U8245-10-00 for $376

As far as I know you need to match the year of the tachs so you might want to get both and see.
Maybe you can explain to them away you want to try and if they don't work return them.

Babbitts had them for about $100 More.

Hopefully we can find a shop to just fix the gauges for $150 each...with a lifetime warranty of course ;)

Thanks penguin, I think I will go that route since lens is not clear anyway. Odd how that one model gauge starboard -30 i believe they want $1300.

I have a 2013 242 Limited S and my Port gauge LCD display is not working. Looking through parts diagrams the AR240 has the same wiring harness for the Tachometers. Would a pair of 240 gauges work in a 242? I could buy both AR240 gauges and the speedometer for less than one port gauge for the 242LS.

Yes thats the $1000 question , What is in the AR240. port gauge that makes it cost 3x as much?
Port F3H-U8245-20-00 for $1171. 242LS
Port F3H-U8245-00-00 for $ 373. AR240

I can live without half the tiny little info on the LCD, just fuel level needed.
just need working tachs ,

For those ill informed about the lcd function on the 242 tachs... What does it show?
