@thefortunes
I have a feeling your experience with Tesla as a company has significantly influenced your views. -
Nope I'm still ordering another EV and fully aware I will still need a gas car just choosing not to order a Tesla due to poor customer service I really do hope Tesla fixes this though they have potential to be a great company this is a major hold back. Tesla definitely has problems that they need to address, but we have been without a gas car for over 2 years (3 EVs) and will probably never get one again (unless it is a collectible or toy).
I can only speak of my experience, but adding 2 hours to a 13.5 hour drive (assumes you only stop for gas, no food, bathroom, etc...) is more than offset by the car's ability to drive you there. -
Please go route me a trip that is a 13 hour drive from your current location in a gas car and show me that the Tesla estimates it will only add 2 hours because that is just highly unlikely unless you live right on an interstate and pick a location that ends on an interstate even then its a huge stretch from what you will typically experience. We have a condo in Pensacola and have driven there (from Wisconsin - right about 1000 miles) at least a half dozen times. Real world is (7) 13-25 minute stops totaling about 2.25 hours with about 13.25 hours of driving. I have over 250k miles of driving Teslas, so I know what real world is. Here's a pic, by the way (column headings that were cut off are : Beginning SoC, Ending SoC, SuC Cost, SuC Time, Drive Miles, Drive Time, Total Time).

By the way, you could make more&shorter or less&longer stops as you choose. This is just the optimum.
Real World is I'm going to Kings Island this weekend the the gas car time it is 9 hours 52 minutes the Tesla tells time with charging and not taking the optimum route because it needs to route to super chargers is 13 hours 7 minutes this is a 3 hour and 15 minute difference on a 10 hour trip the difference on 13 hour trip would be in the 4-5 hour range I will include pics below. When I route from Myrtle Beach to Kings Island I get 1.25 hours of charging - see next pic:
We will take my Ford F250 it has adaptive cruise which is just about as good as the Tesla AP system since you have to still have steering input on the Tesla and the F250 wont lock me out of the feature after three times of it not reading my steering input. You don't have to have "steering input" you just have to keep a hand on the wheel in case something happens. If you can't rest a hand on the wheel you shouldn't be "driving." That's all it takes (as you know).
Since you brought up value and range, please name another EV currently available with > 300 miles of range for less $ than the model 3 (or Y) -
Currently only one available the Mustage Mach E California Route 1 Edition its at least $7000 less expensive maybe more depending on your state then the model 3 that gets over 300 miles range but thats not a fair comp the Mustang more compares to the model Y to which it is atleast $11,000 less expensive. If we compare the Standard range model 3 there are lots of options. Some will say you need the higher range but they are wrong you need a gas car if you do lots of long trips. 6 month lead time, but yep you found ONE. Not really comparable in performance or range and it's only RWD but it at least hits 300 miles for < $50k.
Also curious how many SuC stops you make between SC and south Florida and how many gas stops you would make in a comparable SUV (you can't compare it to a Prius, c'mon). -
My F250 get 500 miles range so its one gas stop anywhere I would drive over 1000 miles one way I'm flying lol. The Prius gets 500 miles range as well but I know we don't want to use that as the Prius is still the cheapest car to operate on the road but they are boring as hell. See pics below on th SuC Stops on a 10 hour trip I'm doing this weekend. Since you've had the car for 2 years you know the Tesla navigation is WAYYY overconservative - it gets you to the next SuC with 20% of your range remaining. Totally unnecessary and slows down the trip. Again, see my pic (and real world experience) above - you should add about 1.25 hours of charging for a 600 mile trip at most.
Finally, there is no additional charge for AP - you know that. If you want FSD (which doesn't add many features of value at this time) that is $10k or $199/mo.
Sorry you are correct I quoted that wrong was thinking FSD but said AP but Tesla AP is not much more the Adaptive Cruise as mentioned my Ford F250 has this. Most of the current EVs coming out have something similar to FSD at it current capability. AP is significantly more than adaptive cruise. I do not have ANY input into the drive for about 960 out of the 1000 mile trips to/from Pensacola, although I do typically rest my hand on the wheel as Tesla "requires."
I agree about the potential of (and scepticism about) the cybertruck and hope other manufactures catch up to Tesla. Competition is good.
