I know the US brought this up Friday. I haven't heard how the "defect" was actually discovered. Does anyone here know?

Regulators didn't notice this ruse for years. The problem was only uncovered by an independent group, the International Council on Clean Transportation, which wanted to investigate why there was such a discrepancy between laboratory tests and real-road performance for several of VW's diesel cars in Europe. So they worked with researchers at West Virginia University, who stuck a probe up the exhaust pipe of VW's clean diesel cars and drove them from San Diego to Seattle.

my buddy drive a passat TDI. FANtastic car, I was jealous..... should be interesting.

Interesting how the software knew it was being tested. If the front wheels were turning (on a dyno) but the back wheels weren't, it turned on the emissions control.

This is pretty blatant and underhanded. Even if the emissions limits are BS.

I never knew they did it on a dyno, I've never living in a smog test state, are they always done on a dyno?

St. Louis metro test is not like that. More like a code scanner. The mechanic that does mine told me all the emissions parts just have to be on the car, not working.

In Illinois they USED to put cars on a dynmo....but no more (at least when I left 6 years ago they'd stopped). In NC they just check basic stuff....like if your turn signals work (which they all do as no one uses them!!! )

I wonder how much lower their stock will go? 170 down to 111.....OUCH (hey...its up 5% with the announcement of the resignation of the CEO)

Billions in fines on their way.....crazy!

LMFAO, theyre calling it "dieselgate"

this is gonna be BAD.

now Iv'e gotta start wondering, what other car companies are doing this, and will go down in the wake of VW. You KNOW its been done....

Come on...that 707 HP hellcat CANT be all clean emissions. but who cares. I mean I wouldnt, doubt anyone who has one does :) But those folks who buy the TDI's want to conserve fuel, and many of them are enivronmental advocate types as well.

I suspect all makers are some how "adjusting" the figures, can of worms comes to mind.
Diesel engine cars have grown to a massive proportion here in the UK, even to the extent you can buy a diesel car and pay no road tax based on the cars emissions, but if that cars output is found to be false then your going to have to cough up, very messy.
I blame governments for imposing impossible emission targets, it's the same with ethanol in fuel, that's only there to lower emissions.
I've mentioned before, I hate diesel cars, don't get duped USA, stick with petrol (gas to you guys;):D).

I love my Audi Q7 TDI....great towing power, great fuel economy! They had better not try and fix it!!! (yes I know it supposedly isn't one they cheated on...yet!). There is a reason all big OTR trucks are diesel. As for the emissions....I'm very happy we no longer have smog in the US....flew out of Chicago yesterday and it was so amazingly clear you could see the lights on the Michigan side of the lake!!!

@Britboater why do you hate diesel cars?

@Julian probably because they all but shove the diesels down your throat in the UK. you get huge credits for driving them....... every car manufacturer has a bunch of them. they live with congestion over there (in cities) that would make us cringe.

so far, it looks like youre probably ok with the 3.0. . its just the 2.0's.

something I just thought of... folks that own one of these 2.0 cars... their resale value might have just took a dump overnight. (most likely temporarily, assuming VW figures this out) Unless folks that really only want the economy drive the price up for used ones since theyre not being sold for awhile. :) I know, for awhile... TDI's were at a premium. I was VERY close to shopping for an older one, for us to commute with, then possibly give to my son for his first car. Prices were HIGH.

We shopped for a used TDI Jetta a while back for a commuter too. Even for a used one with over 100k on the clock they were still crazy expensive. We bailed on the idea and found a gently used Sentra instead and still get close to 40mpg on gas with more horsepower and cheaper maintenance.

Tip o' the iceberg, peeps. This one gonna get UGLY. A few green fantasies are going to get smashed on the rocks of reality before all is said and done.

yep.

thats what I was tellin myy buddy, who thought i was talkin smack about his Passat.
no, IM just saying...the folks who built your car(that I really like) are SCREWED. and going to be a LOT of angry environmentalists.

I tried hard to get my wife to look at and buy a VW diesel a few years back. Luckily now she never listens to me..

This is big league screw up for sure. 7.8billion put aside for a "fix". End of the day the consumer will suffer

Frank zappa has a song about that dyno/dynamo? machine doesnt he?

Give me a break.
I drive a 2013 Passat TDI daily. That thing is awesome and pulls like a mule. It is a fairly large sedan giving me 44mpg with a close to 700 mile range... That is better than Prius last time I checked.
You can swipe a clean tissue inside the exhaust - you will get no black residue.
Emissions my @$$.

I'm not defending the EPA emission limits by any means but soot and carbon emissions are different than nitrogen oxide that they are 40 times the limit on.

Get ready to provide proof that you have participated in the recall or consumers will likely be fined next (complete speculation on my part). I would be a lot of owners are not going to jump at the change to lower their mileage and power to comply....they are going to have to be forced somehow.

From the article link above:

Volkswagen hasn't explained exactly why it cheated, but outside analysts have a good guess. The NOx emission controls likely degraded the cars' performance when they were switched on — the engines ran hotter, wore out more quickly, and got poorer mileage. Some experts have suggested that the emission controls may have affected the cars' torque and acceleration, making them less fun to drive. (Indeed, some individual car owners have been known to disable their cars' emission controls to boost performance, though this is against the law.)

4 TDI's in my house. Most have all emissions equipment removed and heavily tuned. 55mpg +.

I predict alot more manufacturers are going to feel the brunt of this, I just hope it doesn't trickle down too far. Compared to what others have done, this is pretty minor IMHO.

The engineer in me finds this whole thing fascinating while the cynic in me isn't the least bit surprised! Make the rules draconian and arbitrary and then act all shocked when someone tries to side step them? Hell, it's a logical conclusion. Just look at the financial sector.

For entertainment, here's a link to the paper that started it all: http://www.theicct.org/use-emissions-testing-light-duty-diesel-vehicles-us
Published "2014.05.30" and the hmmmm line is buried in the fourth paragraph. "Most importantly, distance-specific NOx emissions for the two high-emitting vehicles were below the US-EPA Tier2-Bin5 standard for the weighted average over the FTP-75 certification cycle during chassis dynamometer testing at CARB’s El Monte facility"

Whoops!
