It is the insidious nature of sucking something up that is dangerous. If the boat is in neutral or at least idle forward or reverse, the impellers are still spinning at idle speed and they only go in one direction whether your in forward or reverse. And the intake is always sucking if the engines are running. By insidious, I mean it happens very slowly, so you may not even notice until it is like wtf! And until some restriction causes enough pressure on the shaft to stop the motor, it just keeps on wrapping. And could pull you underwater if you got caught in the loop! You simply must not idle around people in the water with ropes in the water too. These are very safe boats, but a lack of understanding could certainly cause them to be less than safe.
