I'm staging this - I have just picked up terrestrial antenna for OTA, and have hd homerun extend coming. Will post later, gotta watch finale of westworld with wife.

Ok. I am moving the pieces into place but now questioning the use case.
I went with directvnow with their promo package deal for 35/month so now the use case for the San is:
1. Movie library transcode - I need to do this with my dvds
2. OTA broadcast DVR with hdhomerun serving up the ASTC with h264 compression
3. Local backup/cloud for home
Does the collective group think the qnap still fits this use case or is it overkill?
It's worth it for Plex alone ONLY if it has enough horses to transcode. Private cloud is great if you have the bandwidth to support, meaning decent upload speed. Local backup is great since it's time machine target. It's still cheaper then a purchasing single computer. I say do it!
I also use the Synology 214+ to stream media, with a pair of 3TB drives. Very happy. I started with the Dlink DNS323 then got the Synology 3 years later. The Synology is very fast and streams simultaneously to any amount of devices we own. Cam.
Update: I experienced pixelation with hd homerun extend on my televisions using fire tv and fire stick. I decided to split the antenna and re use coax from Directv boxes to connect each tv to antenna direct. I'm seeing apps that are giving option to on demand what I normally Dvr on the broadcast side. Directvnow for the rest.
Now I'm challenging whether I should even go for nas at all. I use Apple radio to stream (boat) have a ton of cds. But never ripped them. Similar situ with dvds and blu ray. I have iCloud in place for phones and photos. Do you guys see a remaining use case for Nas for me??
