You are not missing anything. Except: try doing that without leaving a trace of your fix!@swatski , a little surprised at this. Disclaimer: I haven't needed to do this on my boat. But I thought that it was a matter of pulling the rail, dropping in some 5200/4200, and putting the rail back. What am I missing that would affect the cosmetics, etc. as you suggest?

A dealer/boat trader will take a rub rail that looks re-done as a red flag. In older boats that would be a tell sign the cap was lifted and possibly major work done. Or - the rub rail’s been... leaky! (Yeah, imagine that)
A seasoned Yamaha boater would probably just shrug it off. “They all leak” as Yamaha dealers like to say. But I would personally not touch the rub rail, unless I had to or from the inside (good luck with that, lol).
(I’m being a bit sarcastic here in this post, of course)
