The administration of this forum really needs to decide whether we want to allow political discussions or not, and enforce it heavily. This used to be the fun place on the internet where we could all shoot the shit about our boats. I find myself here far less often because of the content and conduct being permitted, and that's fine, no one will miss me. Its a shame for the future of this place though.

I guess by saying that you needed more training to drive a vehicle that you do to buy a firearm somehow goes against the 2A?

Buffalo shooter had body armor. Texas shithead was wearing a plate carrier but did not have ballistic plates in.

It's an interesting area for regulation. I don't own body armor, but I've considered it for a SHTF situation. Its prohibitively expensive for a 'what if' purchase.

If not agreement, at least understanding of the opposing position and respectful exchange of controversial ideas, is something that happens less and less. I find these exchanges quite enlightening and have learned some new info from time to time. The alternative is some echo chamber where we hear nothing we ever oppose.

It's tough to mark the time when it becomes political... It sucks a bunch of kids were shot...(not political?) How can we make it better?... Why don't we take guns away from all... did that go political somewhere?

The question is valid, if we have some good answers, no harm with providing them. (I'm opposed to the confiscation of weapons from the populace because criminals already have weapons, and they don't care the weapons are illegal, so it just adds to the criminal's advantage for criminals to have a monopoly on non-law enforcement weapons)

I think making sure we hear opposing opinions helps us either become stronger in our faith or change our mind. No harm per se comes to the reader I don't think.

Maybe we can add a flag to posts that says Smells political, and you can self enroll in some group that hides the posts marked as such? Just seems like a shame to stifle all conversation that might make a wrong left turn somewhere. (Pun intended )

This is the most F'd up thing I read about the shooting yet. There were parents begging the officers on scene to go in and do something.

Even more disturbing is the video of the parents outside the school begging the officers to do something. smh


Officials say the shooter, Salvador Ramos, “encountered” an armed school district security officers outside the school. He was able to make his way inside anyway, after which he shot at two Uvalde police officers arriving to the scene, injuring them. He then barricaded himself in a classroom, opening fire on everyone inside. Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said 40 minutes to an hour passed from when Ramos encountered the public safety officer to when he was killed by a tactical team.

Couple of thoughts on the issue:

1. I don't own a gun and don't intend to ever purchase a gun. This isn't because I am against them and if you want to own one, do you. I will say that the love that some people have for firearms is a quite concerning.

2. Interesting that a lot of 2A politicians will point to family life, lack of education, mental health, etc when these horrific acts are carried out. However, when topics such as funding education or mental health are brought up, those same politicians will dismiss it and call it socialism. If you are fine calling out what you think the underlying issues are but refuse to address (fund) those issues, don't be fucking dumbfounded and play the "don't politicize card" when a call to tighten up firearm laws are mentioned.

We have places in the US where gun ownership is difficult.

Sorry, as a Chicagoan who knows a lot of Chicago cops, even when Chicago HAD restrictive gun laws it was useless/laughable. Chicago ended up being surrounded on its borders by gun shops just across the city line. If you lived in Chicago you just drove to the edge of the city to a gun shop.

So whatever legislation we pass...it has to be National -doing it State by state would be pointless.

The kid was wearing a "tactical vest" not body armor. Just a vest to hold all the magazines he'd bought.

He walked into a store and bought a semi automatic rifle (twice) with no checks needed.

89% of Americans agree that universal background checks should be required. Our politicians won't bring this to a vote as they are all owned by the NRA - which is an arm of the gun manufacturers who don't want to make ANY concessions as its deemed a slippery slope towards fewer gun sales.

More guns means more gun deaths. We could chose to do something, but unlikely we ever will because of the NRA. We could make a gun today that would not fire in a school just like we have drones today that won't fly near an airport. That technology exists, along with lots more that we could do to make guns safer - much like we made cars safer. The first store in the US to offer smart guns had death threats called into it! Think about that -- f'ing nuts!

You are 100% incorrect he did in fact fill out the federally required paperwork as well as the state required paper work and passed a federal background check on both purchases, sadly those checks are protected by HIPPA which prevents any of the local, school and social services notations of mental health to be enforced by law enforcement.

Side Note ( Universal Background checks) are already in place... Its called NICS which stands for the National Instant Background Check System which every state and law enforcement agency in the country has access to. Its up to the state to use that system or form their own. Its is FEDERALLY required that all Firearms, Frames, Receivers, Rifles and Shotguns have an independent or federally accepted approval number. All paperwork must now be held forever it used to be 20 years. Your statement of going out of state to purchase is also false it is federally and state regulated. Its federal law that Firearm's, and Receivers be purchased in the state that you reside. Doing anything other than that is in fact felonious and will get you a 25 year prison sentence and a 250K fine

Also your graph takes into account self inflicted gun shot fatalities which is a huge issue in this country and a huge number, our agency produces those numbers, I am more than happy to discuss.

In your final statement Smart Guns, do exist and have been found to change nothing as anything that is coded can be hacked.

You moved the goalpost. Firearm homicide is a sorta uniquely American thing (but its not, see Mexico or most of South America). His claim was about violence, not the manner in which it is committed. Intentional homicide rate below. The US is still way higher than I would like it to be, but its not just guns. It's socioeconomics, its treatment for drug addictions, criminal justice policies, access to healthcare, etc. Guns are a part of it, but not the only (or even predominant factor).

That is still not correct, I appreciate you changing your statement but that's still not right. You can't just drive and buy. That is so far from true. Those who practice this or participate in this are committing serious crimes. Its not commonplace activity that any person can just do. Criminals are the ones making those deals, not legal owners.
I will not argue that this doesn't take place, it does, sadly at a rate that LE and Federal enforcement can not control. Is it too easy to access I can not deny that. Will regulating it any heavier prevent illegal activity I can't say yes or no. But remember prohibition, I personally put faith in the fact that government and state agencies are working harder than ever to form taskforces and communities within the industry to curb senseless violence and family heartbreak. I work with some extremely passionate individuals who put their lives and their families lives in jeopardy trying to infiltrate and take down rings of illegal firearms. They are forming national databases and creating large scale cases that cross state lines, which departments and agencies working hand in hand to help prevent things like this. Online watch dog agencies, and independent volunteers trolling for warning signs or posting to help stop things like this. Criminals don't stop trying to bypass laws, and now law enforcement is everything they can to match their craftiness. Its a never ending hour upon hour battle that gets sidelined because people don't see immediate results. I agree completely that things need to change, do I have answers no, does anyone.?
Now more than ever we need a dialog of honest brainstorming and self policing, not finger pointing and misinformation.
I never want to see a headline like this again, not here in the US or anywhere else. But fighting and arguing opinion isn't going to stop it.

I really like the boating information and I will stop posting in this forum as its become more than I wanted to see on a boat page.

Sorry, I've not read the whole thread - I assumed we were talking about firearm homicide as that is what happened in Texas. It is a subset of all violence. No goal posts moved - just focusing on the guns (which many hate to do). Yes....people kill people, not guns. Just like lawn darts don't kill people, or kite tubes don't kill people, but we banned those and solved the problems of the deaths caused by them pretty quickly.

But we'll never solve the problem of guns killing people because we are addicted to our guns. Arguing about guns is like trying to tell an alcoholic he has a problem.

I grew up with guns and learned to shoot at school! I don't own any and don't have the need to. I firmly believe that we can do many things to prevent more deaths, but the gun manufacturers lobby is too strong. If the first mass school shooting didn't sway us, nothing will. Every country has people with mental health issues - many have far better healthcare to treat them - we could change that too, but healthcare isn't a right here either. Plenty of law enforcement articles/interviews about how our jails are full of people with mental health problems - were we just warehouse them with no treatment.

Someone please explain why you need a semi-automatic weapon.

Is this a serious question? Do you know what semi-automatic means? Can you tell me why you need a car that can exceed any speed limit in the country (since that's the illogical comparison of choice in this thread)?
